cortex has a new job and was hard to track down and we had a few months of missing each other. We found some time on August 14th and tried to play catch-up. Runs about 97 minutes.

In the post on Rotten Tomatoes, someone mentioned Metacritic, which immediately made my inner reader voice add “(no relation)”. And it made me wonder - at this point, especially thanks to DirtyOldTown’s continuing fantastic posting of older movies, whether we could add a “liked it / it was ok / didn’t like it” button that people could click that would show as a metric under the post, like a favorites count.

The locked safe from this prior metatalktails has been opened, just a little too late to put the resolution in that post. (Local news link - archive link if you can't access original)

short version if you just want a summary

The safe was mostly empty save some odds and ends and another locked compartment, which was also empty.

What's a story you'd like a update or resolution to? Can be a real life event, a series that you yearn for more of, or a problem you'd like a solution to.

An idea for fundraising... What are the AskMe posts you most wanted to see updates on that did not get them? What would you be willing to donate to MetaFilter to get that update? Would you donate $5 to see if they ate the thing? $5 to find out if they went with a product rec from the Ask and whether it worked? $10 to see if they quit that job? $20 to see if they DTMF? Let's bribe our way into some answers.

"Be in this world as if you are a traveler, a passerby, with your clothes and shoes full of dust. Sometimes you sit under the shade of a tree, sometimes you walk in the desert. Be always a passerby, for this is not home.” I was alerted a week ago to Dylan's passing by a brief mention on his employer's website and wanted to make sure that those of you here who knew him were aware that he is gone. I can't find an official obituary notice posted anywhere and have more questions than answers myself.

When scrolling the various meta* sites at night on Mobile Safari, the larger soft-gray and translucent address bar is replaced with a smaller, but full white bar that lights up the entire room.

Recently I have noticed several different commenters on MetaFilter using the phrase "wheelchair bound." This is a phrase that a lot of wheelchair users (including myself) find deeply objectionable, as wheelchairs actually give us freedom of movement compared to not having a wheelchair. (Also, a lot of wheelchair users are ambulatory wheelchair users, e.g. they can sometimes walk a very short distance.) The preferred term is "wheelchair user". If using it as an adjective, you can say "wheelchair using", e.g. "My wheelchair-using girlfriend."

Much of the planet right now is dealing with very intense climate related heat waves. Thought it might be helpful to provide a check-in thread and a space for people to discuss the weather/climate, thoughts, concerns, how we're staying cool, what we're doing to try to conserve energy and survive this climate hell. Stay cool, drink water, check in with the vulnerable peoples, friends, family, & be safe.
