MeFi Help for Katrina Students?

We used to sponsor a Mefi scholarship. There will be so many displaced students from Katrina - maybe we could reinstitute some Mefi scholarships for kids who need to relocate or change colleges? Just a potential idea for a way we could hep as a community.

I'm weary of collecting money at all related to the hurricane relief. Paypal has to do what it can to cut down on fraud and it seems like they're a bit overzealous in doing that.

And with a baby, that's a distinct possibility.

Well, we could, I dunno, not use paypal or something.

There are sites out there setup to collect money for cheritable organizations, which a mefi scolarship would definetly be.

Also, the NAACP is doing something like this, scolarships for displaced NOLA students (of all races). At least I heard they were, I can't find any info on their site about it.

It's a nice idea, but the universities and the NAACP seem to have it under control. Many universities are accepting students as exchange students, no question of tuition - mine is, most of the way across the country.

I think the best idea may be just to donate to the Red Cross, etc. Send cash, give blood. I know people want to do more (God knows I do), but I don't know that we really can, short of those in the region. The relief agencies really can direct the care to where it needs to go, when they are allowed to.

One of the evacuees being interviewed also asked for prayers.

Excellent charity, IMO.

True of people who are students now. But the people who are kids now, who will need a scholarship in 10 years?
