Strange superlative.

I have many delicious vegetarian recipes, but I better not tell this guy. I would hate to be responsible for him punching his mother in the mouth.

Or worse, my mother.

It's really not all that strange in the deep south. Saying something will make you "slap your mammy" is, while hyperbolic, not uncommon. I've even heard of a po boy at a Louisiana restaurant advertised as so good "you'll throw rocks at you grandma." Now that is a good sandwich.

Is that better or worse than calling for assassinating the President?

I recently found out that the standards are much higher in AskMetafilter than they are in the Blue and the Grey. (Hi Jessamyn!) I actually hadn't realized that, perhaps because I'm goofy in the head and easily confused. It's a good thing this place has some standards somewhere.

I figured it was a variation on the BBQ slogan "BBQ so good your tongue will slap your eyebrows right off your head." Yeah, I don't get it either, but I understood it.

My understanding is that the phrase means "Mom, I am SO ANGRY that there's this INCREDIBLY GOOD dish out there and you NEVER made it for me! *slap*". Something to that effect.

I seem to recall a similar tack in a series of beer adverts, like 'Our beer is so good you'll smack your bartender for never introducing you to it' or some such. Possibly replacing the bartender with your father or best friend or someone else responsible for introducing you to Good Things(tm).

Uh, whoa, I didn't exactly mean to piss anyone off. I just think the imagery of something being so awesome you have to turn around and punch your mother in the face is hilarious. I've definitely heard "slap your mamma" in the south, and I thought "throw rocks at your gramma" was pretty good too. I never really thought into it so far as that the reason was she never introduced you to that kind of cooking.

In any case, Methylviolet, if you were seriously calling me out and now just being funny, you really need to have your humor glands checked out.

I never really took it as a punishment for not introducing the food to you. I always assumed that the food was so good you would go crazy and do something outlandish, something you would never, ever do in your right mind, like throwing rocks at your grandmother or slapping your mom.

A elderly cajun man once told me that his snapping turtle stew was so good (and I quote here) that it will make your "tongue slap your brain!" I always saw that as a sign that it was so good you would lose control of your senses.

Pollomacho, that's what I always thought too. That article I linked, claiming it had to do with punishing your mother for a failure of food introduction, seemed a little strange to me.

I thought of "slap your mama" as simlar to "smack my ass and call me sally," etc.
