Pretend you are a new user. After an excellent first post, you slip up and post some discredited bunkum. A predictable (and pretty funny) pile-on ensues. How do you respond? With class and grace.

Well played, Mr. King, well played.

Yes, but now in this Meta thread you can have a crazy flame out and vow to never come back, threaten other members and generally act like a maniac. This is your right. You've earned it.

I was so disappointed. I really wanted a flameout, too.

I've done several flameouts and I'm still here. PTHTHTHT!

But where are the histrionics, the temper tantrums, the cursing and calling of names? These are the very foundations that MeTa is built on! Did you forget that MeFi only exists to provide fodder for MeTa threads?

Talk about letting the side down. They just don't make users the way they used to. Ever since we passed the 15k mark, they haven't been up to scratch at all.

Props to Edward King. He's willing to learn the ways of the MeFi community.

What would this be? It isn't a call out.. it isn't a flame out...

Edward King is clearly a fark undercover agent. His calm and gracious response was just a clever attempt to lull us into a sense of false security. He will spring his notorious plan soon enough.

WE'RE ON TO YOU KING!!!! YOU WON'T GET AWAY WITH THIS!!!!1!11!!

He forgot to stop by MeTa for the obligatory flame-out!

See? This is why we can't have nice things....

MY GOD THEY GOT TO SNOPES TOO!

My favorite comment.

He certainly responded well. I do recall that lot of weblogs found it an interesting post.

Responding to jibes with class and grace are anathema to the metafilter ethos , we want tasty , flame grilled threads with little barbecue marks on them.

Thanks for this non-callout—not only is it a deserved pat on the back to a nice guy, but I had missed that classic pileon, which literally had me crying with laughter. I'll be remembering MY GOD THEY GOT TO SNOPES TOO! every time I see a debunking. And I voluntarily send all my keystrokes to the ZOG...

Jesus Christ. I'm sick of this place. Your echo-chambery Bush-envying PC hypocrisy, your rabid bloodlust at the first sign of weakness or difference in a new poster, your collective and organized unwillingness to even ATTEMPT to apply critical thought to ANYTHING AT ALL instead of just reiterating the same tired fucking cliches over and over and OVER

IT'S JUST ALL SO MUCH BULLSHIT. YOU PEOPLE ARE BULLSHIT. YOU ARE MADE OUT OF SHIT THAT CAME FROM A BULL, AND I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF IT.

SO DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE SCREEN DOOR HITTING MY ASS ON THE WAY OUT BECAUSE IT WON'T BECAUSE YOU IDIOTS ALREADY STOLE IT AND PUT IT ON THE WARPED AND YELLOWED EXCUSE FOR A SUBMARINE THAT IS THIS SINKING FUCKING SITE

I'M CUTTING MY HAND OFF RIGHT FUCKING NOW

Nice try cortex but you forgot the hastily misspelled words. Bonus points on the mid-sentence all caps words though. I'll give it an 8.5.

No no, that was good, the messed up html lends to credibility. The careless attitude toward puctuation is a nice touch. By the way 'shitlicking morlocks'; pure gold.
posted by Mr T at 12:58 PM on October 28, 2005

I don't know; I feel I that on a close reading the attempted use of an entity code for the ampersand betrays a degree of forethought at odds with the notion of unhinged ranting. The only thing worse would be an em-dash, really.

I wonder if Hemmingway ever felt like this when he was posting to Internet forums.

scody: yeah, that was the line that, I hoped, signalled the transition from ambiguous is-it-or-isn't-it flameout rant to undeniable parody.
