Because deleted threads are visible via lowfi MeFi, does that make them visible to search engines and, if so, doesn't that mean that a deleted thread still has some value in page ranking etc?

Exactly - because of the lack of documented guidelines here (not saying that's a bad thing, just sayin'), common-law is pretty much how things are decided. That comment almost (and to some minds, does) gives approval for self-linking, provided the person doesn't know it is not allowed. As you can't prove what someone doesn't know in this environment, denial makes it aceptable.

Exactly - because of the lack of documented guidelines here (not saying that's a bad thing, just sayin'), common-law is pretty much how things are decided. That comment almost (and to some minds, does) gives approval for self-linking, provided the person doesn't know it is not allowed. As you can't prove what someone doesn't know in this environment, denial makes it aceptable.

KLANGKLANGSTON: The problem I have is that, if my understanding is correct (which it often isn't), the site that has been linked is still linked from MeFi even after it is deleted because the deleted threads are not actually deleted but are removed from the main page of the site - if you know the thread number, you can find it manually and it is still accessible via lowfi.mefi, therefore is accessible to spiders from search engines. In this case, the site that has been linked gains the benefit in page ranking from being linked to by a major site.
I don't think the problem is all that widespread yet, but it will no doubt catch on now that a couple of people have identified it. Ironically, we are making the problem worse by talking about it ;-/

It's a problem because it means that it will keep happening, causing this site to suck. Most of want to avoid that.

By getting offended because I was mean to someone who purposely breaks the rules here in order to earn a few bucks, and getting even more offended because of something I posted offsite, you reveal yourself as someone more interested in conflict with me than anything else.
Which is pretty funny because I have no idea who you are.
