Certain links stay in the same page? October 31, 2005 6:05 AM   Subscribe

Could certain links on a page ignore the setting in my profile for open links on a new page?

When I look through days and days of metafilter posts, and I click on the "next" and "previous" links on the bottom of the page, my screen gets filled with browser window after browser window. When I click on the [!] to flag a post, I end up with three windows open on my screen ... the original window, the page where I can choose what type of flag I'm getting, and a confirmation window that will supposedly redirect me to the original message. All very, very messy. When I click on the "metatalk" links at the top and bottom of the pages, it doesn't spawn a new window. Is it possible to make all of the metafilter internal links ignore the spawn new window? Or was there some function in mind to clutter up my screen, and I'm just not seeing it?

Yes, and don't complain about it either or #1 will take away the open-inks-on-a-new-page option altogether. Shhh.

If I Had An Anus: "Yes, and don't complain about it either or #1 will take away the open-inks-on-a-new-page option altogether. Shhh."

Complain. The HTML feature for a page to control where a link opens is bad and user-unfriendly. Because this kind of option has to be done on a per-site basis, it makes your web experience less homogenous. If you like open-in-new-window, do you dislike it when pages don't open new windows when they link off-site? Wouldn't it be better if the browser could be configured to open links to other domains in a new window or tab?

The user should always be the one to choose where the next page goes, either through browser configs or with K+M shortcuts (like shift-click, ctrl-click, etc).
posted by Plutor at 6:31 AM on October 31, 2005

It should just open external links in a new window. As it is now it even pops up two new windows during the post/comment flagging process, leaving you with three windows. (The original, the flag page, and directing back to thread page.) Not that I'm flagging that often, but there's an example.

I keep meaning to turn off the open in a new window option, but I just keep forgetting. Until the next time it annoys me. And then I remember briefly until I get distracted by something else shiny. And so on.
posted by loquacious at 7:25 AM on October 31, 2005

It should just open external links in a new window.

Well, how does it work now? It could be done by parsing all links on the page at page load (assuming the user has checked that option) and adding an onclick event if the url doesn't contain "metafilter.com" in it. That wouldn't be perfect, but you could refine the domain checking as Metatalk gripes pop up.

That is the pitfall in letting people use nicknames instead of their real names; the temptation to develop alternate personnas can be too strong to resist for some people. One way of looking at it is that a pseudonym can allow a person to be whatever he wants. Maybe this is a good thing for the guy who didn't get the lead in his high school play and is now stuck in a cubicle.
I had a hunch that you were not god or infinite. How surprised will we be if we find out that you are a psychiatrist in Holland, Michigan?

Yeah, that's right, Cran. I'm not getting involved with the big circus going on in that thread, because I'm not involved with any of these actual people usernames, although I must say that jenleigh did grab my attention for her (to my eyes) peculiar interest in the "Holland and Islam" threads (which have my interest for more obvious reasons), while at the same time exhibiting intricate knowledge of US public affairs.

When that happens (especially in a post of my own), it makes me think "hey! where are you *from*?" and pull up their profile or something. I mean, I'm no y2karl-style keyboard Sherlock, but it did strike me as odd that she would use such forms as "neighbor", "behavior", "flavor", "scrutinize", "polarize" and "grade school" (albeit in the derogatory, slangy sense) which aren't in any way unknown in the UK, but not exactly common among Scottish speakers either. Maybe I'm just sensitive to that stuff because I'm a non-native speaker or something, but I thought it was odd. Not that I expected this, of course.

People on the internets aren't always who they seem. Ahh, it's 1995 all over again. :)

Ah, yes gnfti! As an American who must spell in "British" in order to work the crosswords in the Sydney Morning Herald, I can appreciate your concern over "neighbor", "behavior", "flavor", which should have the extra "u" that I think Noah Webster dropped, and "scrutinize", "polarize" which should end "ise". What should "grade school" be? Something about "form" or is that for secondary education?

Good detective work! I too eschew the internecine battles. So far, the vendettas do not involve me, and certainly don't appeal to me. Stags locking horns.

Sock puppets - the glass slipper of the internets

Furthermore, I would like to promote usage of the word "batshitinane". Just so you know.

Apparently one of these:
To further illustrate that peanut butter can go haute, or at least semi-haute, Best Cellars, a New York wine retailer, put together a peanut butter and wine tasting for me. "Fruitier styles of wine seem to work best," says Mollie Battenhouse, wine and training director. The fruity sweetness of an Australian Queensland rosé with smooth peanut butter gave a sensation of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but more refreshing. A fortified Spanish Monastrell Dulce from Yecla was almost too good with cinnamon raisin peanut butter, echoing the dried fruit beautifully. Non-vintage tawny Port was an excellent foil for chocolate peanut butter.

How does this sound?

[first draft]

The floodgates opened one year ago. We are the deluge. [more inside]

On November 18, 2004, registration for new users was reopened (for a one-time $5 fee) after a long period of closed membership. Within the following month, the user count went up by 3239 (including incomplete registrations, of course).

Some have doubted, many have welcomed. We're here, and that's what counts. And I can't speak for all of us, but personally, I'm damn well glad to be here. So I would like to thank Matt for opening the floodgates, and Matt, jessamyn and all of you oldbies for putting up with our quirks and for helping us getting our sea legs.

So: oldbies, How do you feel about the influx, one year on? Newbies, how are you getting along? How's being here?

I don't think I qualify to answer your question but for me the first six months were great and then it seemed like the big slide down towards farkdom began. The longboat is great as an antidote. It feels like going back in Meta-time to 1999 or 2000. That's before my time in terms of posting, but I was a heavy lurker. Admittedly, I primarily read MeFi back then for the articles links and not the centerfolds comments. Nice Donkey, upon reviewing your (otherwise delicious) shout-out, I have had to establish that your rendering of the Seal of the Longboat bears a crucial inaccuracy: the flag should wave toward the right, not the left.

I would consider this a disgrace and a disrespect to our wonderful, righteous endeavour, were it not for the fact that we have of course recently changed direction. It logically follows that our emblem should reflect this change as well. Thus, I instead commend you for your loyalty and grace under pressure, and award you the Official Viking Star. Do with it as you please.

An updated seal of your design is expected to be forthcoming.

P.S. Also, the donkey faces left and not right in the original seal; but how you sit in our beautiful ship is of course a matter of your own choosing.

Hard at work here, trying to finish The Big Money by John Dos Passos, and in the brief bio of W.R. Hearst I read this:
When McKinley was forced to declare war on Spain W.R. has his plans all ready to buy and sink a British steamer in the Suez Canal but the Spanish Fleet didn't take that route. He hired the Sylvia and the Buccaneer and went down to Cuba himself with a portable press and a fleet of tugs and brandishing a sixshooter went in with the longboat through the surf and captured 26 unarmed halfdrowned Spanish sailors on the beach and forced them to kneel and kiss the American flag in front of the camera.

Cranberry, I am not going to make friends saying this, but:

I read LOTR for the first time when I was 11 (the librarian smirked as she scanned the one-volume 1100+ page edition and said: "You're going to read that?") and there's no other book I've read and re-read more often. I started following the movie preparations online years before they even started shooting (even though I still have mixed feelings about the films, being such a fanboy of the books), and when the LOTR and HP films came out right about the same time, I developed a deep-seated, callous stance of being in the pro-Tolkien, anti-Rowling camp. I have never read a single page of H**** P*****, and I will die before I will. Thanks.

When I click on the [!] to flag a post, I end up with three windows open on my screen ... the original window, the page where I can choose what type of flag I'm getting, and a confirmation window that will supposedly redirect me to the original message.

This seems to be fixed. Thanks Matt! May the novels in the afterlife be of your very own choosing.

gnfti, now I know how a dentist feel when s/he hits a nerve with a drill. Is it possible that we are related? There is a du Bourg back several generations in the family, and among my living relatives are:
1) one who could recite LOTR at an early age
2) one who all but moved to New Zealand to watch over the filming
3) one who made a display of the figurines in her office that drew others to peek in - also is (usually) Galadriel on any costume occasion
4) one who wears the "one ring" on a chain around her neck.
5) I keep the 4 books in my bookcase headboard.

Some of us also read Harry. You like writing - studying Ms. Rowling is like taking a master class in children's literature. She maintains suspense, but she prepares for plot turns so that they are acceptable and do not interrupt the narrative. She does a lot of things well, and I think the UK is big enough for her and JRRT.

Never is such a long time...

It was a big 'doing' back then and I remember it like this name but I was the one who was listed on the contest form. The 'trip' through the cheese factory was a trip far away and I would have scrubbed sister a form and she put down 'Buttercup' as the cow's name. Well, I wanted 'Jody Hartl'. My picture is in the basement of the Neillsville Pavilion so I got all the recognition. I just had to email you and tell you the cow talked, Mom said 'Chatty' and I thought that cows wore bells so we came for the big event, the teacher had a radio going because they were going to announce a part of this and I saw him last year and he remembered my name from this many years ago. I told him I was who named Chatty Belle and Jody got a form for me. Me and mom thought up the name together. Since the Up With 'Chatty Belle' rally, I'm sure it was more my mom than me who thought to leave mom and dad. hehe When the contest came out, my mom got my this story. You can check this info out if you'd like. They said my name and I started crying because I thought to be in the contest too and put up a stink until mom went and fixed the contest and the person that named the cow in the contest won 100 lbs of butter and a trip through the Grassland Dairy Cheese Factory. Howey Strutz (spelling?) was disbelieving I am the person who named Chatty Belle. Back I believe in 1966 there was yesterday. I was in the 1st grade and had never heard of hott nude text. Chatty Belle. Now that's hot, don't you think?

You know how it is, you go to Thanksgiving at someone else's house, and then you're too full to think logically about the need for leftovers, and then you regret it all day the next day, sitting in the deserted place where you're forced to work, with nothing for lunch and no prospect of anything good later, and then, the coworker whose last day at work was Weds makes a special trip back to say goodbye one last time because she remembered how you said that you loved Sweet Potato Pie, and her dad made and extra one, and she just thought she'd bring it to you. So I'm going home and gorge, motherfucker!

We did Thanksgiving at the inlaws, and most everybody picked up a nasty stomach virus. Ugh.

EEK! (you decide if that's for the in-laws or the virus)

A young person sees the flashing lights, the heavy hardware, the radio pinned to the shoulder, the power! So s/he signs up to be a cop and finds it is drunk patrol. Not to mention the pimps and pervs and punks. The wonder is that anyone stays in the job.

IIHAA, thanks for posting the walking type man. I had lost him and am glad to see him again.

Ewwww! Too much information!

Is that really gonna help redeem her after the mushroom incident?

Note to self: never leave the longboat.

So then, Donkey, are you pleading innocent to early masturbation? How about nooners?
posted by If I Had An Anus at 1:31 PM on November 27, 2005

Hmmmm. Nooooooooooooners.
posted by caddis at 4:51 PM on November 27, 2005

The longboat is kind of like a little mini-nooner, without the special sauce, that you can partake of any time as long as the longboat stays afloat.

Whore Thigher-doll.

That was ridiculous. I apologize. Iapo Log Ize.

Why? Because our hold on this tag is tenuous. We've lost so many. The horror. When you reach over and put your hand into a pile of goo that was your best friend's face.

Thanks for the link to the plans, gram. I am out of pitch, is Elmer's glue ok to hold my paper longboat together in the Willamette? How about the Columbia?

I'm curious about the "anus umbrella" but afraid to ask.

If you change your mind and ask, perhaps you should change your nick to Pandora :-).

A SpongeBob character apparently, Cranberry. Though this feller is more what I had in mind.

This

is no donkey, it's a hinny. I don't know about the dude in the suit. That was how I pictured amberglow when I first read his username.

I really wish I had the time to get into MMOGs. Or maybe I don't. One or other, definately.
posted by If I Had An Anus at 12:30 PM on November 29, 2005

I think MeFi is a MMOG for some users. A pretty damn open ended one.
posted by raedyn at 12:39 PM on November 29, 2005

MMOGgie. Nary a soul shard, though.
posted by gramschmidt at 12:52 PM on November 29, 2005

What a nice moggie! Here you go, moggie, have some soul shards.

So, a mule is the offspring of a female horse and a male donkey, and a hinny is the offspring of a male horse and a female donkey? Why have I heard about mules but not hinnies? Are hinnies stubborn? Do they bray? Do they neigh? Do they whinny?
posted by Nice Donkey at 1:45 PM on November 29, 2005

*uses excess Elmer's to glue soul shards back together*
*resolves to resist siren song of online games*

I don't know. I think I have more questions. Are you a hinny, Cran? I'm so confused.
posted by Nice Donkey at 7:55 PM on November 29, 2005

In the interest of (the current catchword) transparency, let me state that I am not now nor have I ever been a hinny. Except for you, Nice Donkey, I do not even know any donkey-types.
I merely sought to play with the concept of what sound a hinny might make: w/hinny.

And yeah, there's a lot of Mefites. Or is that even what you meant?

What part of SKIP DOWN HERE didn't you understand?
posted by If I Had An Anus at 9:15 AM on November 30, 2005

Perhaps IIHAA meant that MetaFilter is a big rogerin' place, meaning it's a good place for people to meet up and roger one another.

On the other hand, there are a lot of people here. Maybe too many. Run! I mean, row!
