Dead Puppy Ads Are Gross November 15, 2005 1:21 PM   Subscribe

First Amendment issue? I have to say I've been really grossed out the last couple of days by the dead puppies picture in the ads on MeFi. I'm not for censorship---but similar to a NSFW notice, can't there be an icky picture warning that you can choose to click or not? I understand that is the point of the ad, to raise my ire (or bile) so I'll do something. But ewww.

I should say, of course, that I only see the picture when I'm not logged in, but that is most of the time unless I plan on commenting because I usually check in from work.

Killing dogs for fur is so wasteful: they're much better used for eatin'.

Well, this isn't a First Amendment issue since mathowie is neither a) Congress or b) a state bound by the Incorporation Clause.

But that aside, does Firefox's AdBlock extension help? Or perhaps you can just login all the time and then you won't see the blogads.

... also, I don't think the puppies are dead. Yet.

I logged out so you don't have to. puppy picture (but it doesn't work in Firefox because the mimetype is set wrong or something)

Damn dude, why don't those Chinese fur farms actually kill the animals first? I mean that's almost enjoying watching the animal suffer. Besides JCrew's fashions are lame anyway, if you want fur done right go to Gucci.

It takes a special kinda community to prefer looking at dead and dying dogs in cages over hot almost nekkid goth chicks.

Why can't we have both, again?

Silly, they are taking those puppies out to a wonderful farm where they will have wide open space so they can play and run around.

Also, you have multiple means at your disposal to not have to look at those ads, so the best solution is for you to take advantage of one of those means instead of having Matt drop the ad.

I'm not 100% positive, but I seem to recall when I approved the ad they weren't using that image. They can change it at any tiime. I think it runs out soon so the problem kind of solves itself.

Well, actually suicide girls has turned out to be pretty weak. Threatening to sue their former models and blacklisting girls who complained about their cut of DVD proceeds.

Maybe matt could advertize some of the former girls who have struck out on their own(nsfw)? Not that I'm saying he should, but he could and that might mitigate some of the complaints.

Also, matt, maybe you should institute some system where people can complain about ads. Someone complained about this same ad on metachat the other day.

They have to be en route. Just ask yourself: why put dead dogs in cages? Hmmm?

I don't understand, really. The ad is an anti-animal cruelty ad, right? And the people who are opposed to it don't have to see it by definition, right? The ad might be in bad taste (or it might not), but I'm not sure that it's that much of an issue.

because dog and cat fur sheds like mad if the animal is killed before skinned. It keeps much better if the animal is skinned alive. which is why them little fur-bits on fashions lately make me ill - especially when the shop assistants have no idea what kind of fur it is. That means it's likely dog.

where does this come from? lots of anti-fur places say the same thing, but i can't find an impartial source. is it just cats and dogs? or all animals? i've never heard any other source of fur require skinning alive.

and what process causes it? why should fur that's been taken of an animal skinned alive be any better than from a dead animal? what is so bad about being attached to a dead animal that doesn't affect fur once it's removed from a live animal? in both cases, presumably, it's not getting any support from the animal.

if it's not true, what would be the advantage to anyone in reporting it? one possibility is that it gives the reader a justification for assuming that such barbaric behaviour is the norm, rather than the exception.

It certainly isn't true of other animal fur, or if it is, it isn't mentioned in anything I've ever read about trapping.
