Revisiting the famous cult mushroom thread November 30, 2005 2:23 PM   Subscribe

Just to tell all of you the famous mushroom thread is finally tapering off. (But can it still reach the 1000 post goal?) Have there been more and more pictures and silliness in threads since the mushroom thread? Now that we are able to look back on the mushroom thread, is it the cause or the symptom of this growth in silliness? I've been here not as long as many, but it feels like there has been a definite and noticable increase in the silly factor. I am not saying this is wrong, just sort of curious what caused it.

That thread is the physical embodiment of Metafilter's growth. Silly stuff like that used to happen when Mefi was smaller and less active. Now it happens on a bigger scale. Also, your electricity bill goes up when additional people move into your house, and I can now drink a full can of Coke, even though I'd get really full drinking a Coke when I was little.

unfortunately, not even the occasional need to resort to HTML will keep them in check.

What I don't understand is why some threads (like one a couple of days ago) that are trying to resolve some etiquette issues get closed for no other reason than to shut down an argument, but other threads are allowed to stay open long after they degenerated into nothing more than random inline images and nonsense posts that exist for no other reason than to artificially boost a post count.

The deep, dark secret is that they are not only allowed, but carefully and scientifically formulated to annoy the bugfucking shit out of you.

The good news is that we're still fine tuning the formula, so you're safe for now.

The bad news is that eventually find a thread formula that will cause your head to brisantly detonate like a watermelon stuffed full of RDX.

The really bad news is that hundreds of innocent bystanders will be drenched in the misty remnants of your head.

one word: holidays.

It's a little more complicated than that, but not really. I assume you're just talking about MetaTalk. Some threads are closed when the issue is resolved. Some are closed when they dissolve into sniping and some stay open when they dissolve into sniping to keep a new thread from being opened that also dissolves into sniping. The jon_kill thread opened and closed before I even saw it the other day, but it did seem like his question had been answered.

Though, at least one of us would probably unknowingly go home with a wannabettie, and have a night of drunken, debauched sex anyway. At least that would be worth writing home to mom about.

On most other boards of this size, yes. And I don't know where you were going with the idea that people dedicate their lives to it ("lol people with unbalanced lives suck"?), but they'll read the site at their usual pace and be able to change it.

It usually means a more formal audit trail (read: per-comment moderator comments rather than per-story), and a private moderator forum for them to talk about you behind their back.

Because usually the freaks don't reveal themselves in a single post and the mods will need to be able to tell each other to keep a watch on that one.

This may sound vicious but it all depends on the people chosen.

And this isn't a request to be a moderator, just the usual plug to ditch coldfusion and go with phpilfer because it's really good.

It is really weird that metafilter works as well as it does with almost no supervision. But it does, so why mess with it?

I hate it when people, apropos of nothing, all of a sudden decide that they know what's best for this site and give their opinion wether this or that is what's best for metafilter rather then simply stating that this or that irritates them or doesn't.
