As I was walking home this evening, a little girl was riding her bike in the middle of the street. She still had the training wheels on as she wobbled and struggled to peddle. It reminded me of when I was little and how badly I wanted a bicycle but couldn't get one. My parents wouldn't let me have a bike until I was 12; my mom was too afraid I'd hurt myself. I'd pass the bike section in the store and just look, having given up asking my parents about it long ago. I eventually did get one after much pleading and begging. Amazingly, getting my driver's license at 16 and the subsequent borrowing of the family car passed without incident.

Not sure why people need to be re-directed to an unrelated thread right below the on they are in. It wasn't even funny. The first one is just odd and confusing why someone would have that thought in response to the FPP. The second one at least has the virtue of being mildly funny as a mocking of the first one.

jjg: That is a truly sad story. Having overprotective parents must have sucked. BTW, it's pedal, but no matter. They were doing a story on my happy local news today where they were asking people 'what's the best gift you ever got?' For me, it was really easy. A yellow Schwinn StingRay with a white glitter banana seat that I got for Christmas when I was 11.

My family bought a stationary exercise bike for Christmas when I was around 13. I was tasked with assembling it. While trying to dislodge a part that got wedged in another, my screwdriver slipped and stabbed me right below my nose and above my upper lip, piercing all the way through and hitting my top front teeth. I was bleeding all over the bike. My parents took me to the emergency room, where I received stitches. When we got home, I finished assembling the bike. It wasn't a very good piece of equipment.

I have thought about getting an exercise bike, but we live in a one-bedroom and I don't know where we would put it.

It occurred to me at one point that our building does have a secure bike room on the first floor. I could make the argument that, well, this is categorically a bike...
