poll feature on AskMe? December 30, 2005 3:46 PM   Subscribe

PollFilter? Not to turn AskMe into a run-of-the-mill forum, but polls, either as a component of AskMe or as a separate "tab" (like Projects, MeTa), would be a neat way of getting the community consensus on straightforward questions.

Ha Ha! He thinks there would be "straightforward" answers!

It's a very good idea.

Kos does it all the time, giving people the option to add a poll to their postings. It must be technologically easy to do.

I should be called SuMe (Survey.Metafilter).

How would a poll add anything other than a notion of weighted, trivializing pollstering to an AskMe question?

I'm pretty much hating the idea of subverting the complicated interplay of ideas and experience that powers AskMe by encouraging people to just punch a button.

This is an argument against, not for.

BRILLIANT! Now, instead of callouts, we can just do it Survivor style, right?

Matt is getting voted off the island! Hah!

Alternatively, you could post links to your own polling software.

I'd like to suggest a poll subsite for all the whiners, callouters and thinskinned, self-pitying babies.

It'll be nicknamed Po'Me.

What really need is AJAX support for comment, so we can put actual polls right in the comments.
posted by delmoi at 6:21 PM on December 30, 2005

well, the selects were nice while they lasted, too bad I didn't know about them before today.

oh, and if we get polls, then I say we should also be able to call a friend if we don't know the answer and also be able to have 2 choices eliminated.

(i think the coffee question is a really good example of why this is a bad idea. i haven't been back there to see if anyone has made such a comment, but ever since reading it i've been toying with the idea of posting a long discussion about how people typically react to things that are not normal in their culture, their fear, their desire to control others who don't follow the same norms they do, etc etc. reducing it to a yes/no poll makes that kind of thing impossible and, in my opinion, that's a real dumbing down of mefi. people who ask whether children should be allowed to drink coffee are not going to give the options:
[ ] yes
[ ] no
[ ] i am an insecure idiot that reacts to the unknown by restricting the freedom of others)
