Goodbye! January 2, 2006 8:30 AM   Subscribe

I've decided to make myself scarce. Just saying thanks, good luck, and goodbye. (more)

Among my resolutions for 2006 are to finish (or at the very least make a major dent) in various writing projects that haven't been getting as much attention as they deserve. In order to do this, I have to stay offline as much as possible as the web is far too distracting to me--MeCha and MeFi are my two biggest draws--I thank and curse you all for this fact just about each time I visit.

The email address in my profile is still active should anyone wish to contact me and I've also set up a general "what's up with Dobbs?" mailing list (see my profile), should anyone give a shit. :)

Here's hoping you have a wonderful and productive year!

You can check out any time you want, but you can never leave. See you around.

Good luck to you. Don't be afraid to drop by occassionally when the writer's block gets you down.

Well, post some projects when you're done.

May the most you wish for be the least you get. Good luck with your endeavors, dobbs.

I love dobbs. The good thing about all this is that when he's finished with his self-exile and has become world-famous for his efforts, we'll all be able to say we knew him when.

You might want to update the " New site coming for 2005." claimed on your web page. (Write us a "Limey ][" while you're at it!)

I literally just going to say how nice it was to have you back because of this.

can we leave the eagles out of this? they already ruined rock and roll, do they have to ruin metatalk, too?

bye dobbs, and good luck.

Glad for you. Sorry for us. I hope it all works out dobbs. And please come back some time.

It pains me to think that even if I left MeFi, I'd never have enough material for a "what's up with" mailing list.

Hey, I'm in Philly, how do you think I feel?

Peace dobbs, best of luck with your projects.

drop in inbetween stuff, ok?

Dobbs made this place better, but by distracting him from his projects perhaps we made the world worse.

/shrugs

I'll take that deal.

Have a happy and productive 2006, dobbs.

so dobbs, should we mock you if you ever post again without something to show for it?

I fucking love d. like I love very, very few other posters here. but then, as taz said, when he's world-famous we'll be able to say we knew him (and nobody will believe us).

and, if he doesn't become world famous, which I seriously doubt anyway, I'll be equally proud to call him my friend.

buon lavoro d., and please report back. have a great 2006, thanks for the great stuff you've already posted on MeFi, and for the awesome stuff you'll post in the future, when your offline work is done.

*hugs dobbs*

Goddammit dobbs... oh hell, I won't even bother trying to be the devil on your left shoulder luring you to the Dark Side. Do good work and come back when you can.

Great to see you back, realcountrymusic!)

Now I wish I'd sent you that mash note.

Dobbs, you have fans; I'm one. Be well, write your fingers to stubs, and come around Metafilter occasionally, just so i can read your POV.

Good luck with the writing, dobbs, and good to to see you back here, realcountrymusic.

realcountrymusic's back?? also: realcountrymusic left? finally: there was a user here called realcountrymusic?

p.s. how do we pine for the return of a user who joined, participated lightly & then left to never return all in the space of seven months?
posted by jonson at 5:15 PM on January 2, 2006

realcountrymusic was a consistently engaging, thoughtful poster, jonson. I'm glad to see you back, rcm!
posted by horsewithnoname at 5:43 PM on January 2, 2006

man, i'm clearly not spending enough time here. I swear to god, I've never even heard of this user, and here are a bunch of people welcoming him back. oh well, my bad, please disregard my comment above.
posted by jonson at 5:56 PM on January 2, 2006

Best of luck dobbs. To be honest, you've inspired me. I hope to follow in your footsteps. If it makes you feel better, I'll fail. I'll fail for the both of us. So no need to fail yourself.

Deja vu. I could have sworn I had already read a goodbye meta post from dobbs some months back.

700+ posts in those months, so I don't think even my detractors would say I posted "lightly." Thanks everyone. I was really only driving by (there was a thread that drifted into country music talk, and I couldn't resist). But y'all make it real tempting to stick around for a while again. I'll just leave the subject of Wikipedia alone this time.

You have people you refer to as your detractors? I'm really losing track of this site lately...

Yeah, I remember when we all knew each other and everyone noticed the moment that someone didn't chime in to flog their favourite pony You know, the "Golden Days of MeFi". Now, it's all strangers and user numbers so long you can hardly remember them all. Damn kids. "Get off my lawn!"

For some reason I read this entire thread in the voice of Lou Dobbs with the Hotel California guitar solo screaching in the background (all in my mind, of course).

Good luck, dobbs. I should follow in your footsteps, but I am too weak and lack discipline.

I'm late for the goodbye party (hey, who ate all the cake?) but I'd also like to say Good Luck & Have Fun, dobbs... wrestle your projects to the ground and write the hell out of 'em!
