However, MetaFilthy version 2.3 (and later) allows you to turn off the sending of your username and id and the url of the page you have commented on.
Nice.

Thanks for the update; I have a short question though - occasionally, when checking for deleted threads in AskMe, several of the results will be pages that note "Nothing to see here, please move along". Are some posts only semi-deleted and others really deleted? Obviously, I am stoopeed and know not whether this is a MetaFilter or a MetaFilthy issue. My guess is that it's a MetaFilter thing, but if not, perhaps this is fixed in the newest version of MFilithy?

Older Ask me threads were reallly deleted. Any thread in the last month or so should show with the reason for deletion and should still be readable along with all the attached comments. There is also the way anonymous posts work [discussed extensively previously recently in MeTa] which may create the odd blank areas you see. I don't use the plug-in, so I can't know for sure, but that's what I think is happening. Matt technically has the ability to "really delete" AskMe posts, but I don't think he ever does it, now that we have a better alternative.

Possible bug: I don't seem to be able to save my preferences.

I suspect this might be because I have a wee laptop monitor and so can't see the entire preferences window (though there's no scrollbar). On my screen the last section is 'Comment Tracking', and the last checkbox is for the 'Jump to the first unread comment in each thread' option. There's no 'Save' button in sight, anyway, and changing preferences then restarting Firefox has no effect...

I'm using Firefox 1.5 on Mac OS 10.4.4.
Yeah, the preferences window is a mistake. Unfortunately, it's not an easily correctable mistake. So it'll be fixed right after the first contribution of cash for MetaFilthy. ;) Which means, no time soon . (In fairness, a few users offered contributions, but I couldn't take them because they'd already contributed by beta testing.)

<s>In the meantime</s>, For the foreseeable future, if you type the url "about:config" into your browser's location bar (the thing that reads "http://metatalk.metafilter.com/mefi/11104" when you're on this page), and you then type "metafilthy" (lower case, no quote marks) into the input box on that page, it'll show you all the metafilthy preferences, and will let you change them.
Anyone who dislikes messing about with Greasemonkey scripts can directly compile them to a Firefox extension. Avoids the muss and fuss. Just tried a compiled XPI extension version of my script with Greasemonkey uninstalled, and it worked fine.

orthogonality is it possible to set the plugin to not jump down to the comment box when pasting in a quote? Especially on really long threads it would be nice to be able to grab a series of quotes on your way down and then reply to them all. Right now I end up scrolling up after every quote to get back to where I left offreading and half the time I over shoot.

>I'm a much bigger idiot than you're giving me credit for, mdevore.

Umm, well, Metafilthy isn't a compiled Greasemonkey script. I mean, it might be because I don't know either way since I neither wrote it nor peered about its guts.

All I'm saying is, if you don't want to, don't like to, or can't figure how to, install Greasemonkey, but you do want to use a Greasemonkey script, you can make the script into a Firefox extension using the posted link. It will then stand on its own without the need for a Greasemonkey install. (The second machine I installed Greasemonkey to hiccupped to the point where I had to reset Greasemonkey settings via about:config to make it work, so there is something to be said about eliminating the need for Greasemonkey simply to try out a particular user script).

Being an idiot is completely optional. And unfortunately an option I've exercised myself on occasion.

There are some subtle (security and timing) differences between extensions and Greasemonkey, but generally, yes. Also extensions can add locale-specific messages, default preferences and GUI crap, while a GM script can't.

reflecked writes "Metafilthy is installed. I see no indication there's anything there except 'clear private data' has appeared in my Tools submenu."

"Clear Private Data" is a Firefox 1.5 thing, not a MetaFilthy thing.

If MetaFilthy is installed, you'll see a small "MF" icon on the Firefox status bar, but only when you're in a non-closed thread (it won't show on front pages or close threads).

Clicking on the icon will turn it yellow; when it's yellow, you can click on any comment (or the post itself) to quote that comment. (This is mostly for users with one-button mice.) Alternately, you can use the right-click context menu in any comment (or the post itself), and click on "MetaFilthy" to quote the comment. If you select part of the text of a comment and then click the context menu "MetaFilthy" or the icon, you can quote just the selected text.

In Firefox's Tools|Extension dialog, clicking on MetaFilthy will let you set your preferences, if you have a large enough screen.

MetaFilthy will also put a white horizontal rule before your first unread comment in a each thread, and show where comments have been deleted.

Need more help? There's an online manual on the download page.

Mitheral writes "orthogonality is it possible to set the plugin to not jump down to the comment box when pasting in a quote?"

What the hell, sure. Send me your email, I'll send you a copy that doesn't jump down. But to change the behavior, you'll have to go to about:config, I'm not adding a GUI.
orthogonality.. What you said above gave me more help than the online manual on the download page (which I did read). Metafilthy is installed, and I'm figuring it out now. Bless your heart. :)

I've tried twice to post this comment. Each time, I get defaulted to the Metafilter login page. heh.. the second time, I got canny and copied my reply before hitting the "post" button.

But to change the behavior, you'll have to go to about:config, I'm not adding a GUI"

New functionality worked perfect. Thanks.

Thank you.

That worked. Metafilthy uninstalled, and Firefox opens again.

It was the only extension I had, as I uninstalled Greasemonkey a couple of days ago.
