He posted that stupid site as a spam project as well.

I heard that http://www.megite.com hurts puppies for fun and has ties to islamic terrorism.
posted by killdevil at 10:12 AM on March 28, 2006

removed the comment which seemed like a spammy self-link, and the BURN HIM comments. I'll write the poster a note and make sure he gets how the site works, how bannination works and how torches and pitchforks work. That should do it.

Since we've been invited to continue here...What about a "self-link" flag for cases like this? I know we all love a good pile-on, and spammers are pond scum and all, but I wonder if a specific flag to alert the mods to this sort of thing might help cut down on the kerfuffery a little? Self-links do fall under "it breaks the guidelines," but so do double posts and they have a flag to call their own.
posted by Gator at 10:21 AM on March 28, 2006

I, for one, frown intensely upon attempting to Google Bomb self-links.
posted by Plutor at 10:24 AM on March 28, 2006

He posted that stupid site as a spam project as well.

What makes that site inappropriate for Projects, as the rules currently stand?
posted by PinkStainlessTail at 10:27 AM on March 28, 2006

you ought to remove that projects link too.
posted by puke & cry at 10:27 AM on March 28, 2006

did anyone else see what looked like comment spam for a site called 'newsvine'? I read it one day, then realized later it was probably a self link, but I couldn't find it again.
posted by delmoi at 10:28 AM on March 28, 2006

what the hell? projects.metafilter.com shows this project as the last one, yet profile shows this project, which is supposedly 254. The actual link goes nowhere.

Is the project waiting to be approved?
posted by delmoi at 10:31 AM on March 28, 2006

What makes that site inappropriate for Projects, as the rules currently stand?

Because the current rules don't stop spammers from spamming. Is it ok to let it go ahead just because he didn't break any rules that need to be refined?
posted by puke & cry at 10:32 AM on March 28, 2006

Is it ok to let it go ahead just because he didn't break any rules that need to be refined?

Yes. He used projects exactly as it's designed: a place for members of the community to post their own sites. Period. It doesn't matter that he only joined metafilter to self-promote if he did it in the right place (well, eventually). I personally think Projects needs a waiting period, a minimum number of comments and maybe some kind of review/approval process, but the post wasn't subject to any of those requirements.
posted by PinkStainlessTail at 10:47 AM on March 28, 2006

Is the project waiting to be approved?

Yeah, and I don't hide the unposted ones at the moment. Fixing that...
posted by mathowie (staff) at 10:55 AM on March 28, 2006

Oh there is an approval process. My mistake.
posted by PinkStainlessTail at 10:57 AM on March 28, 2006

Yeah, but it's relatively new and kind of snuck up on us.
posted by Gator at 11:01 AM on March 28, 2006

Please telling me: why is it inevitable that all spammers are having the same English stilts? To separate at birth Chen and Mr. Yoda? Also they to love the infinitive hooray.
posted by Optimus Chyme at 11:04 AM on March 28, 2006 [1 favorite]

Yeah, and I don't hide the unposted ones at the moment. Fixing that...

Oh good. That should cut down on the project spam.
posted by puke & cry at 11:05 AM on March 28, 2006

No, it'll just increase the level of invisible project spam! That's how they getcha!
posted by cortex at 11:08 AM on March 28, 2006

Oh good. That should cut down on the project spam.

Er, the unposted ones were showing up in people's profiles, but not on projects.metafilter.com.
posted by delmoi at 11:11 AM on March 28, 2006

I guess that should be sorted out too then.
posted by puke & cry at 11:14 AM on March 28, 2006

wait, that's what matt just said. I need to pay more attention.
posted by puke & cry at 11:15 AM on March 28, 2006

I agree with P&C. Matt should fix that. Maaaatt!

Anyone else find his English rather humorous? It's interesting how many spammers have a bad grasp of the English language.

Please hope us all.

posted by matthewchen at 12:20 PM on March 28, 2006

matthewchen, it pretty much never happens here. Disasterous accidents (along the lines of "oh god I did not mean to post that") are occasionally memory-holed by the admins, but mostly we let our uglies and stupids stand until they die the normal death of community-ish self-policing.
posted by cortex at 12:26 PM on March 28, 2006

How did you hear about MeFi, anyway?

And wouldn't it be interesting if that was a required field on the signup process?
posted by cortex at 12:27 PM on March 28, 2006

Please provide the function to retract a comment in case the first timer makes a mistake.

That function doesn't exist, but if you avoid making the same mistake again, no one will care. Self linking in comments isn't a banning offense, but making a post on the blue to your own site is.

Self linking is what projects are for, but generally people don't like it when a totally new person shows up and posts a project.

Metafilter was auto discovered by our system (sorry no name in here to avoid trouble) and I saw it frequently appears in our top news page. Since then, metafilter is my daily reading.

A mistake is when you type "greart psot," not "there are also great links on my site" when your site has nothing to do with the post.

You signed up specifically to shill your boring, ad-infested blog. You intentionally made an irrelevant self-link. That's a mistake, all right, but not an innocent one.

Dang, there goes a perfectly good lynching.

Oh well, off to the poli-blogs for my daily dose of outrage.

posted by delmoi at 1:13 PM on March 28, 2006

So what you're saying is that spam is okay as long as you like what it advertises? Thanks.
posted by Optimus Chyme at 1:19 PM on March 28, 2006

No, OC is right. Fucking spammers always pretend innocence. Go back and read previous threads. "I am new to your site and not knowing your procedures!" Bullshit.
