removed the comment which seemed like a spammy self-link, and the BURN HIM comments. I'll write the poster a note and make sure he gets how the site works, how bannination works and how torches and pitchforks work. That should do it.

Since we've been invited to continue here...What about a "self-link" flag for cases like this? I know we all love a good pile-on, and spammers are pond scum and all, but I wonder if a specific flag to alert the mods to this sort of thing might help cut down on the kerfuffery a little? Self-links do fall under "it breaks the guidelines," but so do double posts and they have a flag to call their own.

what the hell? projects.metafilter.com shows this project as the last one, yet profile shows this project, which is supposedly 254. The actual link goes nowhere.

Yes. He used projects exactly as it's designed: a place for members of the community to post their own sites. Period. It doesn't matter that he only joined metafilter to self-promote if he did it in the right place (well, eventually). I personally think Projects needs a waiting period, a minimum number of comments and maybe some kind of review/approval process, but the post wasn't subject to any of those requirements.

matthewchen, it pretty much never happens here. Disasterous accidents (along the lines of "oh god I did not mean to post that") are occasionally memory-holed by the admins, but mostly we let our uglies and stupids stand until they die the normal death of community-ish self-policing.

That function doesn't exist, but if you avoid making the same mistake again, no one will care. Self linking in comments isn't a banning offense, but making a post on the blue to your own site is.

Self linking is what projects are for, but generally people don't like it when a totally new person shows up and posts a project.
