Reposting Projects March 31, 2006 6:08 AM   Subscribe

Dumb mefi.projects question... If one updates and signficantly revises one's project, it is worthwhile to repost it?

It would be nice if there was a way to update one's project after a while. Perhaps emailling Matt/Jessamyn would be a good idea - either one of them could update your existing entry if there's a good reason to.

How many bites at the cherry do you want? May I just say this is one of the dumbest projects to be featured - an administrator's nightmare. I know we went through this already but encouraging this sort sort of behaviour is beyond whatever...

I don't think it's worthwhile to repost it.

You could always make a Metatalk post about it then people would get kinda interested and look it up themselves anyway.

I think there's a rule that it's only for new projects, though I can't find where it says that.

My question: Is it OK to post an old project if you've just completely rewritten it and the original version was crap? (and it's the first time it's been posted)

Sorry, that might have come across a bit harsh. Ignore everything else and just read How many bites at the cherry do you want? To my mind it needs to be so different that it is a NEW PROJECT before you can repost it.

I wouldn't be against it, but then your project already got quite a bit of exposure.

Burned! (Haha... it's all good, tellurian... you're right, of course, about the relative dumbness of this particular project.)

For the record, I agree with the "no unless it's a new project" philosophy... but I hadn't seen the question asked, so I was just wondering 'n' stuff.

I thought of an idea for the greatest movie ever made this morning while I was in the shower. I think that it should either be called "Love is a Battlefield" or "World of Womance", but I am open to suggestions. Here is the plot:

You have two co-workers: a nerd and a quiet, pretty girl. Obviously, the nerd is deeply in love with the quiet pretty girl, but is too scared to approach her, but admires her from afar. The nerd lives alone, and all he does is go to work (where his co-workers pick on him and make fun of him for being a nerd), and then go home and play World of Warcraft. - Montage of empty boring life: working a job he hates, being picked on, going home to a crappy apartment and eating take-out, and playing WOW-. Well, one night he 'meets' in the game a pixie, or some girl character. She saves him from a dragon, or something. Then he saves her from a ghost. They chat in the game. They become friends. They form a team in the game, and go around beating up dragons or whatever. - Montage of them being a team in the game, fighting dragons. -

While this is going on, bad things are happening at the nerd's workplace. The evil boss is planning on downsizing the company, and raiding the 401k's. The pretty girl finds out about it. She tries to organize their co-workers to do something about it, but they won't listen to her. She gets up on a chair and tries to rally people to her cause, but to no avail. She is embarrassed. People are ignoring her. Our hero (the nerd) sits their silently (as he always does), but somehow (probably drawing on self confidence he built up by being so successful at WOW recently with his pretty pixie friend) stands up and convinces all the co-workers to join together to try to stop the evil boss from doing this. Everybody cheers. The pretty girl talks to the nerd for the first time, "Wow, you were great." So, now we have a split in the action. We see the nerd and the pretty girl working together to stop the evil boss's evil plan, while we are seeing the nerd's WOW character and the pixie fighting against the minions of an evil wizard in WOW who, "No one has even tried to take on yet". The nerd and the pretty girl make leaflets and plan with their co-workers, while the Nerd's character and the pixie fight giant rats, etc. Other co-workers see the nerd checking WOW stats while at work, and ask him about it. He tells them about WOW. Before, people would have made fun of him for playing it, but now he is popular and has his co-worker's respect because he is organizing their resistance to their evil boss. So, emulating him, the co-workers start their own accounts. We get some comic relief by the characters that the co-workers pick, like the frat boy co-worker picking a nymph, and the uptight lady picking a slutty looking sorceress, or the short guy picking a giant, etc. The nerd tells his co-workers to join up with him and his pixie friend in the game to fight the wizard's army. The co-workers say, let's invite quiet pretty girl to join us. The nerd says, 'no she is just starting to respect me, I don't want her to know that I play games all my life', or something. So, further montages, all the co-workers working together against the evil boss, and all the co-workers playing WOW together, trying to beat the wizard. While the nerd's character is succeeding in the game, the nerd is succeeding in real life. He works out, or starts biking to work, and loses a few pounds. He takes a cooking class and stops eating ramen every night. He buys some new clothes, gets a better haircut, and fixes up his apartment. He and the quiet pretty girl spend long nights working against the evil bosses plan, and getting to know each other. He makes friends with his zany co-workers. Things are going great in the game and in real life.

Then something bad happens and we think that all is lost. All the work that the nerd and the pretty girl and the co-workers did was for naught. The evil boss finds out what is going on, and laughs at their efforts, and says that they could never beat him, because they are a bunch of losers. The pretty girl starts to cry, and the co-workers start fighting with each other. Not only that, but a stronger guild in WOW pushes the newly divided co-workers/nerd/pixie team aside, and says, "We'll take it from here losers" The team is so disheartened by the apparent loss to the boss that they step aside and let the other guild push them around. They all decide to just give up and stop playing WOW, and let the boss fire them and take their 401k's. The end... or is it?

The hero gives a rousing speech saying don't give up hope, and convinces everyone to believe again. The pretty girl cries again, but in pride and joy. We get one final montage of them working together in a last ditch effort to stop the boss's evil plan/beat the WOW wizard. Then, the nerd/hero prevails!! Yay! The zany gang of co-workers and the nerd and the quiet pretty girl come together to stop the boss's evil plan, he gets sent to jail, and the nerd is made the workplace's new boss. All the characters beat the evil wizard in the game, and Blizzard flies them all out to California to give them an award, and at least one of the co-workers gets a job designing games. Then, the nerd realizes that his pixie friend has been the quiet pretty girl all along!!!!! OMG!!!! They get married and live happily ever after playing WOW together every night.

Freaking Genius! Damn I rule. Should I post this to projects?

You could add some rivalry to the beginning and call it You Got Pwned.

Cast Freddie Prinze Jr. in the role of the nerd and it's a blockbuster!

Paging unSane to thread 11609; let's workshop NDc(where is the cents sign on a British keyboard?)'s idea!

The whole point of my user name is to get people to look at their keyboards and go, "Where the fuck is the ¢ sign?", and then realize that it isn't there any more, and that things change, and that one day they themselves, much like the ¢ sign won't be there anymore, and for them to live their lives a little more deeply after acknowledging that fact. It is also my rap name.

I don't know about phoodz particular project (haven't looked) but I wondered about the same thing. The project I posted is a mailing list for (very short, unrelated) writing I've done.

However, what if I were to change gears and decide to write a lengthy piece via the same site/project/email list? Is it inappropriate to repost the same site but with a different description that explains the new angle?

I suppose the same thing could be asked for musicians who have a site and put out a new album. The link is the same, but the description is different.

NDcent should get a 'poster of the day' award. This is just beautiful!

Hahahah, ND¢, awsome.

You should pitch it to Sony, it would be a great marketing tie in, except rather then WOW you would do sony's game, everquest or whatever it's called.

By the way, HTML has a '¢' entity, it's "¢"

Well, when I emailed Matt about posting up new issues of my magazine, he said it should really be a significant issue or milestone. I guess the same would be said of updates to projects.

(It all comes to naught anyway as the 'zine proved unpopular on projects so I decided not to post it there.)

kids today are too smart for that straightforward shit. mtv's like, what, 25 years old now?

I think the same etiquette for double posting on the blue should apply for Projects. See DoublePost on the MeFi Wiki.

I think it's okay to repost a project if a year has passed, and there have been major changes/updates.
