Patrick Smith, of Salon's "Ask the pilot" discusses the United flight 735 incident discussed in this rather contentious thread. (I didn't think was worth a FPP, but it might be interesting to some people.)
No, don't think it belongs on MetaChat. OTOH, that thread is still open so it could have been posted there.

Metachat is a stand-alone discussion site, not a dumping ground for the stuff you don't want here. If you want to discuss this on Metachat, I'm sure you'd be more than welcome, but that doesn't mean it's not appropriate to post it here as well.

What percentage of MeTa comments discuss the proper "place" for a thread? Is it greater or less than the percentage of comments that suggest taglines?

As rushmc pointed out in that previous discussion, a post to the original thread would most likely result in it never being seen. Any thread not on the front page is essentially invisible to practically everyone.
There was some discussion of showing recently updated threads in the sidebar, although since it's been several years since the aforementioned thread, I'm not going to hold my breath.
I understood before posting there was no good solution; I picked one of the unsatisfactory ones, on the basis that it would result in people seeing that I thought perhaps they might like to see.

"My Comments" makes this point obsolete. Anybody who has commented in the thread and makes use of "My Comments" will see updates posted to old threads.

My Comments has been acting funny, a question that I was watching suddenly dropped out of the queue a couple days ago. I'd consider the feature still in its beta phase.

Matt has promised time and again that we'll have "flag thread for later viewing" support Real Soon Now.
He also begs that we not use the empty comment hack to flag threads.
I figure it's actually not going to happen until a swarm of us start leaving empty comments.

I, personally would rather see long-lost follow-ups here in MeTa then posted at the bottom of threads I'll never see again.
A 'followup filter' would be a nice addition to the site, but for now MeTa is fine. I mean it's not like the page is drowning in posts like Ask.
