The Game is weird. It's like Mao, or a very thin Nomic, or any other behavior-modification game—except that it is not constrained to the folks who express a prior interest in the game. It's too public, too evangelistic.

I think that's why otherwise meta and playful folks find it so incredibly fucking stupid—it's not that The Game is bad on it's face, it's that you fuckers won't shut up about it. Combine "won't shut up" with "has nothing to say" and the problem takes shape.

Replace "I just lost The Game" with "I just read The Da Vinci Code" and think about how it comes across to everyone else who doesn't give a good god damn.

this is true, except when the slew of subsequent comments doesn't follow. this is the situation i posit currently happens with the game. for instance, on a real train, just cause one car loses air conditioning doesn't mean the whole train jumps the rails and crashes. similarly, just cause one guy announces a lost game doesn't mean the whole thread dies. i'm not defending the announcement, mind. it's off topic and indefensible. but really, this is about as serious as a train car losing air conditioning and it's yet ANOTHER of the metatalk "i'm annoyed by x" threads.

posted by psmealey at 3:33 PM on May 12, 2006

The Game is precisely the agreement to react to the phrase "the game". Players of The Game are folks who decide to do this. That's the whole thing. To think about The Game is to lose it; to comment on having lost it is the only move available in the game. Some folks have tacked on extra rules and restrictions, but that is, I think, missing entirely whatever point and substance there is to the idea.

The allure is in the absurdity of even playing—the weird intellectual pleasure of doing something ridiculous combined with the winking satisfaction of confusing those bystanders not familiar with the game (and getting a returning wink from the bystanders who are). Again, see the card game Mao, or any game of Nomic—both more interesting and less outwardly obnoxious implementations of the same idea. See also Mornington Crescent.

And how long after losing does one start playing again? If immediately, then why aren't "I just lost the game" comments followed by an endless stream of them from the original commenter, since he'd read his own comment and then think about the game again?

As you can see from the Wikipedia link, you have to announce that you lost the game when you lose the game. I've seen various rules as to time-out periods (ie when one person announces that they've lost it, nobody else can lose within 5-10 minutes, etc)...

And moss - that Goldberg statement was exactly what made ME lose the game, so I'm not surprised that it happened to someone else too.

As I said before to the same stupid argument: announce it to your goldfish. Nobody here cares.

And as you know if you've been a MetaFilter member for more than five minutes, posting irrelevant comments to intentionally derail a thread is a violation of MetaFilter policy. You're breaking the rules of MetaFilter to comply with the rules of your ridiculous "game." What could possibly make you think that's a valid defense?

It's not irrelevant!

The content of the FPP caused him, and others, to be reminded of the game. It's on-topic!

languagehat and cribcage: I wasn't trying to further make the argument supporting splatta (although I still support you, brotha!), I was explaining to fff why people say they lost the game in a public forum (and, so far as I can tell, mostly avoid cock punching). But if you can't see how "Man, I managed to avoid thinking about Goldberg for 5 years, you ruined my record" very easily translates into "Great, now I just lost the game", then fine. Be a curmudgeonly old internet crank. See if I care.

Also, to save some time -

Metafilter: Be a curmudgeonly old internet crank.

You don't need to explain it to me. I know why they do it: they want to be cock-punched.
