At least three or four times in the past week, I've thought to make a MetaTalk post asking for the suspension of photos or gifs in threads. I find that, more and more often, they completely turn a thread to shit.

Then, I decided I'd sound like a twat.

Still, I wouldn't lament the loss of pictures and gifs in ALL MetaFilter threads. Feel free to post a bunch of wacky flashing pictures to prove me wrong.

It's a shame, because images are a good thing, sometimes, even at MeFi, but since I got puke&cry's inline chicken-fucking porn pic at work the other day (for which he should have been banned, or at least given a lengthy timeout, I think, and may have been, for all I know) (and yes, I know, I get what I deserve surfing at work yadda yadda)), I'm kind of leaning towards what Coldchef said, twattiness or no.

These things come and go in surges, but it's almost always the same people who abuse the ability to post images and go over the top, ya ever notice?

Sounds like a moderation issue to me, in both senses of the word.

You know, common sense tells me I should just walk away from this thread, shaking my head and lamenting the good old days, but this:

Makes me think I need to clarify my position. I'm about as unclenched a person as you'll find around here. I'm all for the silliness and then fun that is inherit in the community here.

But when every other (and it IS just about every other thread, don't make me get out the box of links) thread fills up with cliched pictures of cats in ceilings, snakes on planes, dicks in my dinner...well, enough is enough.

And I don't think the solution is to just make everyone link their silly pictures. I think, as a community, we're better than that. We can be comical and wacky and all that shit without the bad photoshops and Hasslehoffs. I remember the days when we had wit.

The thread's all in good fun - and we've had threads exactly like it on the front page before back in days of yore.

My only problem is I worry that it'll lead towards more inlining, and that that will lead to the end of the img tag. I don't want to see that, and I think most people don't because there are times when it's really really useful. Matt can set straight a few people who don't understand when it's appropriate, but he can't do anything if everybody does short of banning it entirely. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm more concerned about the options available to Matt than I am about the thread.

And I think adding a little nuance like allowing x number of images posted per month / year / what-have-you would be good too. This would add incentive for people to post only the really great stuff, not just any stray bullshit image that entered their head.

Of course there would be asshats who would spend $5 for another account just to get around the restriction, but hey, more money helps keep the site going, right?

Uh, why can't inline images be judged on the same merits as text posts?

We flag, moderate and delete text posts that don't contribute to the thread- so how about we act like a community and do the same with inline images? If it's attempt to derail a thread or cause problems, I don't see how it's any different.

And yes, this means a subtle censoring of the content of threads... but damn, last thing I need is to open a fricking browser at work to see giant horse cock and mature-pr0n. I'm not going to try to open that Sketchzilla thread, but I see from the My Comments page that fightorflight swiped fandango_matt's creation and used it without attribution as a comment there, gaining the momentary thrill of:

fightorflight wins!

before his lack of originality was pointed out. Not classy. If somebody finds something cool on the net, sure, it's for everyone to use, but if somebody creates something, give them their props.

I had no idea there was an entire comics career lurking in the tiny genre of adding your own word balloons to For Better or Worse comics, but clearly it is the single best comic ever made for this purpose, so hats off to fandango_matt and his cunning discovery.

Hah, the FBoFW comic is particularly ironic because f_m is the one who posted the horse cock and made the chicken fucking animation. It's like an autobiography as told from the perspective of comic page characters. I'd like to write one about Henry Kissinger using Garfield. Nixon can be jon.

f_m's image page has a lot of good ones, like this. Oddly enough, I find myself thinking about that exact scene a lot at random points throughout the day: "There's gonna be two dead people in here! Hurry!"

Oh, totally. But hey, you try working 8pt Comic Sans into those text bubbles in MS Paint. Just be glad I didn't use Arial or System. And I'm still not sure how I mis-spelled "flaky".

Digital Strip is a pretty decent font for comics, IMO. Smaller than 10pts and you have to go bold, but it's still really clear and readable.

So, see, it's not my speech balloon font, it's not my design, no photochoppery was involved, it was just me typing some words into boxes. Handy, that. You can do it too, if you want.
