I figure it's only a matter of time before someone else posts here about this, so here it is.

I don't really hate the post, it's just sort of lame. Plus the apology.

Anyway, here's a semi-legitimate question: Can people make bad posts in the hope of starting a good discussion (ignoring for the moment that no discussion about GWB has ever avoided partisan wankery). Or is it just about the post?

I would say that if you think it's a bad post (and even say so in the post itself) you might be better off not posting it at all.

Isn't this sort of immediate qualification/excuse-making the kind of thing you're calling out?

Or is it just about the post?

We have debated this well over 500,000 times by now. Posts should stand on their own merit with the hope of fostering good discussion.

Can people make bad posts in the hope of starting a good discussion .... Or is it just about the post?

Why not, it works the other way around. People turning good posts into bad conversations.
posted by bigmusic at 10:46 AM on June 26, 2006

So it could have been written better and didn't need the apology, it was still a link to an interesting article that was worth my time to read and caused me to reflect.

It was better than most of the Fark genre that we've been getting a lot of recently, and/or yet another youtube link...
posted by HuronBob at 10:46 AM on June 26, 2006

The only thing that would have made that more of a paradigmatically shitty post would have been if he in-lined a picture of goatse and that was a self-link.

Can people make bad posts in the hope of starting a good discussion?

Can they? Of course. Should they be able to? No.

Just my opinion but the sooner people stop making FPPs because they want to discuss something the better.

A unique and eloquent thesis. If it hadn't been posted I would never have thought to look past the perception that GWB's incompetence is but a smokescreen hiding genuinely sinister conservative policies. Thankyou. Thankyou so much.
posted by peacay at 10:56 AM on June 26, 2006

OmieWise...Sure, it would be great if every FPP was the epitome of intellectual stimulation, neutral, well written, no typos, and multiple excellent links...

but...that won't happen.. even with some glitches in the execution, I found a good link here, it was worth reading.. I guess that's the bottom line for me.
posted by HuronBob at 11:02 AM on June 26, 2006

I'm baffled, GuyZero. The FPP isn't yours but this MeTa thread makes it sound like it is. WTF?

Yeah. The "this" in the title of this (MeTa) post refers to the MeTa post, not the original post. What I am is sorry for is that I posted this here on MetaTalk. So, sorry about the confusion.

Actually, I'm not really sorry about bringing it here, as pre-emptively addressing bad-post callouts in the FPP itself is new (I think) and not altogether welcome.

Guy...I just read your last post 4 times and finally gave up on it making a lot of sense to me... except perhaps that part where you say you're sorry and then say "I'm not really sorry...".

But the "pre-emtively addressing bad-post calloouts in the FPP itself" concept is way beyond my abstract thinking skills.. I couldn't even imagine how that could happen...does it involve some type of precognative skill I don't have...

must be monday...

I never do this, but I sincerely have to say, that post was so bad and annoyingly written that I've gone from being a life long second generation super-lefty who lives his politics for the most part to a raging neo-con just like that. I'm going to go have one of my proxy stooges squeeze all the oil out of an Iraqi child and use it to fuel my H2 when I go out running over the homeless. Good going, dude.

HuronBob : "Guy...I just read your last post 4 times and finally gave up on it making a lot of sense to me... except perhaps that part where you say you're sorry and then say 'I'm not really sorry...'."

He was being silly. See, donfactor wrote a post apologizing about the writing of the post. But he wrote and posted it nonetheless. So GuyZero wrote his Meta callout as being an apology about the writing of the callout, but he wrote and posted it nonetheless. He isn't really sorry, because the framing was the joke.

Kinda like if someone were to say, in Bart Simpson's voice, "I'm Bart Simpson. Who the hell are you?", they would in fact be saying that they were Bart Simpson, but if pressed, would admit that they were not, in fact, Bart Simpson

As for all the idiots who decided to shit in the thread instead of addressing the essay, they should be banned. But, let's face it: at this point they're the majority.

It occurs to me that donfactor has carefully crafted a crap post, so as to appear incompetent to post, ostensibly about the opaque "incompetence" of the Leader of the Free World masking the supercompetence of the conservative right he is accommodating with orgasmic success. And then donfactor gets MeTa'd for it. Boy, there are metalevels of irony in there I can't even begin to fathom...

But that's the problem with irony, isn't it? Once you look at the foundations, "it's turtles, turtles, I tell you, all the way down!"

Not as ugly as Portugal-Holland. Ick. The not-so-bonito jogo.

L-hat: I don't know, I've lived in BsAs and Berlin both, and I like the Germans in the coming matchup. Those Polish-born strikers are looking awfully strong. In any case, should be a great match and it's sort of a shame these two have to meet so early (as opposed to the Italy-Australia-Switzerland-Ukraine part of the bracket, by far the weakest).

I'd also like to go on record here to say I fully support all fútbol-related derails, especially for ugly threads.

[Gets red card for unabashedly backing derails, heads through tunnel toward MeFi locker room being pelted with batteries.]

I really like the Swiss, and was pulling for them. But ya know, if you can't score a friggin' goal, that vaunted defense matters little. Not at all, actually.

I'd bet money on Italy for the next match, obviously, but they really need to get their act together as well. They're lucky they only have to deal with Ukraine.
