We should remember that:

1) That 40000 includes a bunch of users who don't exist.
2) It also includes five-dollar-newbs who never paid their five dollars and thus aren't really users.
3) The count on the front page (i.e. "39199") is only updated every 24 hours.
4) Huge numbers of people registered and never came back. About 17 months ago, Matt said that there were about 6k unique monthly logged-in users on MeFi, and under 4k each in MeTa and AskMe. I doubt that's changed significantly since then.
5) That doesn't include the non-paying and non-logged in lurkers, which Matt admitted on the previous link is "many times the registered numbers".

All that aside, huzzah! 2⁶ x 5⁴!

You could obviously do it a number of ways, considering that f(n) = f(n-1) + f(n-2). But here's the expression with the fewest summands:

What's interesting to me is that it seems like it's only now that the 2004 crowd (my April Fools cadre and the Nov-Dec cadre) are not the majority of the new users. All the sub-20k folks seem (relatively) like geezers now. I'm still much more impressed by the four-digit users (in terms of seniority) than, say, the 14k folks.
