I'm happy to see that snuff is appropriate for the front page.

Workin' on some FPP's myself, via.

I think the "Famous Footage of Chechen Beheading Russian Soldier with Knife" should be a hit. Or maybe footage of people jumping from the WTC, cuz that shit was crazy!

I agree with bardic. It's fucked up that someone posted it on YouTube in the first place (especially since the video is all looped and cut together), and it's pretty disappointing that someone thought it was a good idea to link to it here.

I thought the video was kind of dumb ---

but I don't know, I didn't think it was offensive. I never expected everything posted here to be in good taste.

I think it was worth putting out there. I think it's a damned good thing that people get exposed to what it really means to launch a murderous attack on human beings. What it really feels like to hear a real person dying and thinking about his family.

I'm sick to death of people - America in particular - watching their bloody violent movies and playing their bloody violent games and talking their fat-mouthed, violent, puffed-up bullshit about Iraq, Lebanon, Hezbollah, Hamas, who-the-hell-ever, and not really GETTING what war and violence and terrorism does to real people. I think things like this are a much needed slap in some very heavily-jowelled, self-satisfied faces. I have no idea what Cosgrove's bereaved think about it. I do know that if it were a loved one of mine I'd want it out there. I'd want people to hear it. God, something has to wake people up. Soon.

It's horrifying stuff, but if the family's ok with it being made public, I don't see the problem.

If the family doesn't want it made public, it shouldn't be posted.

It's not snuff.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Too true, man, too true.

Why not just go straight to MeTa instead of trying to disrupt the thread three times?

Because one thread of this argument is not enough.

"Now and again I have expressed the opinion that every nation, and even every person, would do better, instead of rocking himself to sleep with political catchwords about war guilt, to ask himself how far his own faults and negligences and evil tendencies are guilty of the war and all the other wrongs of the world, and that therein lies the only possible means of avoiding the next war." - Hesse

I'm with Decani. Except for the "God" part.

This is definitely something that won't appeal to every reader of the site, no question. Having said that, though, MeFi was never meant to appeal to each and every person that comes by. In case this is not clear already, that includes bardic to the exact same extent that it includes ChrisR (and Todd Lokken).

That video was some harsh watching, but your comments about wanking were pretty far off base. The value of a visceral, emotional response to tragedy cannot be ignored, and this clip does a phenomenal job of invoking just that reaction.

I don't know, I just listened to it, and it's rough stuff, but it seemed to be described as such -- the post says listen to the final moments. I assumed it would cut out at the end and he'd be gone.

To call it a "snuff film" is a bit overstated since there's no actual video of it, it's just a 9/11 call someone set to news footage. It's not snuff porn and doesn't celebrate the death at all, it seemed to drive it home for me how horrific it is for people.

Bardic, your tantrum is getting old. Please stop.

Fucking drama queen.

This has to stay. In the face of a man's last words we're arguing over whether its appropriate? Jesus fuck.

I object to it solely on the "Youtube sucks" grounds, 'cause I haven't watched it.

I think the "Famous Footage of Chechen Beheading Russian Soldier with Knife" should be a hit.

Not the same thing. This was not produced as propaganda, it's a historical audio document.

Or maybe footage of people jumping from the WTC, cuz that shit was crazy!

I don't think we should be prevented from seeing that, why do you? Because you get a thrill from it? I don't follow your reasoning or your assumptions about people "on the internet" in general. I maintain that you're coming across as a moralist and a censor.

I also maintain you're an attention whore for whipping up a redundant MeTa thread. If you think it's distasteful move on.

Call me crazy, but I had my "visceral, emotional response" on 9/11. Called in sick that day because I was crying like a baby and not sure whether many of my friends were alive or not. But it's obvious that some people require metafilter for both their moral and emotional cues. And that's pretty fucking sad.
posted by bardic at 7:06 PM on July 27, 2006

c13, I only hope that your death is videotaped and put up on ogrish or youtube. And then we can watch it via metafilter and feel better about ourselves.

You dumb fucking cunt.

I found it interesting. The Operator was lying to him and telling him that rescue was coming at the same time the NYFD was starting to pull out.

Explain how we are taking our moral and emotional cues from MetaFilter if we watch this? Are you sure you aren't just hoping we take our moral cues from you, as it seems that is what you're pushing for.
