So, would you say that you're on a pro-trippy background campaign?

Hmmm... Interesting. And quite true and very unfortunate. But human stupidity and single-mindedness favour stereotyping something awful. You could quite easily become Not-Anti-SUV-Crusader-Person. People need quick tags for identification purposes. We can't take everything in; we're severely limited. We know of far too many people. Keeping track of them all makes us severely simplistic and hopelessly addicted to facile mnemonics, So I guess it's up to each one of us to keep trying to confuse and complexify the labels people stick on the back of our necks. You've certainly confused me!
Between you and me, palegirl - a permanent reputation for anything is quite difficult to acquire. Non-entities have it much worse. And, besides, I had no idea about the SUV thing. It's not at all obvious, to say the least. So your reputation is fine by me and all the other thousands of non-insiders. :-)

People will automatically try to put you inside an idealogical lockbox based on a few (or more) statements, and damn if you somehow step outside that "box". I consider myself center-left, fiscally conservative/socially moderate-liberal. This opens me up to attacks from both sides of the aisle. The liberals call me some sort of sell-out when I say they spend money on things stupidly, while conservatives call me a liberal/socialist/commie when I "have the nerve" to say the government should take some of their money. When you don't toe the line with whatever group they've lumped you in with, it starts some sort of fracas (see The Current Situation, my support of it).

That's a great idea, Oliver - I myself would say I was a centre-right, fiscally socialist/socially moderate/culturally radical liberal with an anarchistic but strictly non-libertarian bent. Or a Jewish, conservative, big government, caviar-loving, guilt-ridden Hegelian with too many left-wing friends. Or just an indecisive jerk.
Perhaps all this should go into our user profiles so we all know where we stand.

Aaron? :-)

I claim the label "He Who Defies Labels." Please spell it right when you use it.

I'm quite enjoying the way you're completely overreacting here. One person (as far as I can tell) makes a single obscure reference to a thread everyone's forgotten, and you're behaving like there's some conspiracy.

And you were only being accused of not liking SUVs, not of child molesting or supporting gun control, so there's really no need for all this fuss.

palegirl, you think that's bad?
everyone thinks i'm a slut now.

If the video of my friend and I lip-syncing to that song in 7th grade ever got around, I might get a rep.

We were both Will Smith, it was like a Doublemint commercial.

fwiw, I took his comment, palegirl, as a gentle tease, maybe as an olive leaf. "I recognize you! and we had that little difference a while back, but it doesn't really matter, does it? I kind of like you!"

that's how I read it.

sudama, will you post a link to that in your user profile? please?

No, no way. Uh-uh. Forget it.
