Flag feature | In addition to "fantastic post" I would like to have the option of flagging posts "hilarious."

Look, why don't you spend some time on the site, get a feel for the community, before you start demanding 'features', ok?

I already know anyway, so let's skip it.

Signal, that's a joke, right? She joined a day after you did. (7/19/2001 vs 7/20/2001).

why don't you spend some time on the site

I think it's amusing that signal joined September 19, 2001 and maggieb joined September 20, 2001.

I don't want a 'hilarious' flag (too much goddamned grabassery already), but I do want an 'insightful' flag, a 'heartbreaking' flag, an 'annoying' flag, a 'moderately interesting' flag, a 'regurgitation-inspiration' flag, a 'worse than monkey-semen' flag, and a 'not invented here' flag.

That's just for the blue. I'll get back to you with the rest of my list soon.

I want a pirate flag.

Please stop the assgrabbery.

If something is hilarious, wouldn't that also make it fantastic?

I'm sick and tired of all you newbies (users 10329 and up) walking around here like you own the place. All of your comments should be in a smaller font, so as not to distract people from what the real metafilter community is saying.

That's what favorites are for.

They could also be tragic.

I'd like a tragic flag.

The "hilarious" tag would be helpful to me. It occurred to me after flagging a quonsar comment as fantastic. It wasn't fantastic but it was extra-funny.

'Fantastic' was the only positive flagging choice. If I were offended by a comment I get many options; e.g. 'double post,' derail, noise, etc. but if I like a post I only have one (or two, if you count 'other') flag to use in response.

I tend to separate pragmatic posts from whimsy.

I like both.

I want a perfectly cromulent flag.

I think instead of "hilarious," we need a flag for "sarcastic" so that other people will figure out what it is when they see it.

maggieb: Keep in mind that flags are exclusively for telling Matt about the contents of posts. If you think he would somehow be benefited by knowing which comments are hilarious, as opposed to fantastic, then make that case, but otherwise I don't think anybody is going to see any point to this suggestion.

Flagging favorites vs. fantastic:
  • I love the Favorites and Flag features.
  • I know the Flag feature helps with moderation.
  • I don't want to Favorite every post/comment I want to Flag.
I would like a little more balance in the Flag options because comments are censored here.

I'm sorry, I'm not quite understanding. What kinds of changes in behaviour by Matt do you think would result from adding the "hilarious" flag?

I'd like a little Nepalese flag

Is the "Fantastic Comments" page or whatever it was out of commission?

cortex : "Is the 'Fantastic Comments' page or whatever it was out of commission?"

Ok, I could be wrong, I wasn't aware of a "Fantastic Comments" page. I thought flagging "Fantastic" just gave Matt an idea of potential material for the sidebar.

I see now that I over-reacted. In my perfect flagworld the positive comment flags would be either insightful or amusing vs. fantastic or other. See?

I think flags should be binary encoded.
00110101 = Fantastic, Fascitious, Funny, Foreign, and Frumpy

Sometimes I flag things as fantastic because they are hilarious and then they get removed. I'm not sure this would help, though.

The only purpose of the flagging system is to get the admins to look at something. Since both our admins have had their senses of humour beaten to death by blunt jokes, a "hilarious" flag would have no effect.

so i guess this makes maggieb a flag hag.

I heard there was grabassery available here. I would like a drink with a little flag in it.

The "hilarious" tag would be helpful to me.

But the flags aren't supposed to be helpful to you. They're supposed to be helpful to Matt. I don't see how this would be. (Frankly, I don't see how it would be "helpful"—as distinguished from "fun" or "satisfying"—to you either, but you're the best judge of that.)

Much confusion as to the purpose of flagging here. maggieb, I'm still interested in what way this would be useful. Marking favorites *is* useful. Flagging posts is hepling notfiying the admins.
