Hey look, it's MeFi Jobs. Use it to list jobs you'd like to hire other MeFi members for. Also, it helps if you have a lat/lon stored in your profile, as you will be able to see how far listed jobs are from you. There are probably a few obvious bugs but me and pb will do our best to squash them as fast as you can list them.

this isn't a bug, per se, but the "JobsFilter" logo text looks too small. I think it should be the same size as the Metafilter and Metatalk logo text.

Yeah, I think if it means hiring someone from mefi to work at the same place you do, go ahead and list the jobs even if you're not the boss man in charge of hiring.

but the "JobsFilter" logo text looks too small. I think it should be the same size as the Metafilter and Metatalk logo text.

It's the exact same size, just that on a white background it looks smaller (there isn't a dark color to "bound" the logo).

I think I may have spoken unclearly. no promises for this either:

the logo image looks (and is) the same size.
the text JobsFilter looks to be the same size as the text in the Ask MetaFilter, MeFi Projects, and MeFi Music logos---but smaller than the text in the MetaFilter and MetaTalk logos.
I think the JobsFilter text should be the same size as MeFi and MeTa. is it? are they all the same size text?

if they are, and if that effect really is attributable to a traick of the ligh', color me crazy.

I may have a complete misunderstanding of the purpose of this, but is it a feature or a bug that you can view the full job details when not logged in?

I mean, I thought the idea was to advertise and make jobs available to Metafilter members, not the whole world. But hey, I'm probably wrong about that, though. I guess it doesn't matter much.

I would think the white background is very smart for JobsFilter. It makes it likely to be mistaken for a Word document if you're caught reading it at work.

the white looks good. no-nonsense, professional, etc. (stark up against the rest of the family, though.) it's the gray menubar and sidebar that make it look a little funky. also, for me the post title is not obviously a link. it's a different color than the blue/blue links on the rest of the page. where'd the yellow links go? is this a deliberate step away from the rest of the sites' color schemes?

I don't want to offer a "hire me" section with resumes or anything, because that's more trouble than it is worth (there are thousands of resume sites that would suck yours up and spam you to death).

I'll keep contact details only showing for logged in users, so outsiders can't apply sorta.

I think a listing of members skills is kind of weird if there are no jobs for it. If you're an editor, why not just wait for an editor job to pop up? Or describe yourself on your user profile page?

I know there aren't many job listings at the moment, but be patient and I'm sure they'll pick up.

Some people might prefer using a skills directory to placing an ad. Do you place an ad for an electrician or would you rather just look one up in the yellow pages?

Also serendipity plays a big part in what you decide to do sometimes. Ever gone through AskMe or a garage sale, and found that perfect info/idea/item you weren't looking for but found you wanted or could really make useful? This would apply more to unusual skills though....

It's not necessary, of course. I'm just thinking the idea has possibilities.

The "distance" thing is misleadings for jobs that can be done anywhere. Could there by an option on the postings form to indicate it can be done anywhere, which hides the distance thing.

The distance thing actually does a call to the Yahoo Maps API, searching on whatever you put in the location field. I just tried Any/Remote is fine and that apparently matched something on the east coast of the US. I'll make sure there's a null possibility.

Good call. In fact, is there any benefit to having any of the details visible to non-members? Even if contact info isn't available, the details will often contain enough info to allow the employer to be determined. If the idea is to limit it to members, you might want to consider hiding the details pages as well.

Nice feature, though I'm with OS and others that a services offered would be good. Again, not looking for a place to post a resume.

This would be useful for people who do jobs that people on MeFi wouldn't normally post a job listing for. For instance, have I mentioned I started a Catering business in Toronto?

Also, I'd much rather see the location on the front page than X miles away. I might be interested in moving to city Y for a good job, but without knowing the city I've got to click into each one to see it.

the distance thing is fixed. If you select the telecommuting is ok option, it'll skip the location lookup.

We've gotten rid of the aspects of the site that are too much like a job board and focused on the 'organization tool' side. You could use the code for our bookmarklet to do this, but what that will do is add the job to that person's job list, and not to a general pool available to the public. Of course, this means that they'd be presented with a "register with myjobtips" page if they use the link you suggest.

It'll be interesting to see how the "i dunt have 2 expres myself acording to ur outmoded conventions, lol" crowd reacts to this. I imagine there will also be some cries of "discrimination", as well.

To which I say: if you don't want your MeFi writings to have real consequences, don't apply for jobs on MeJobs.

I will point out that there's a particular validity to this practice in my case, as we're hiring a writer. Someone who writes well-crafted posts/comments will be a more attractive candidate than someone who doesn't, and them's the breaks.

The secondary aspect, of course, is that someone who takes a clear delight in being a dick on MeFi will probably be immediately eliminated from consideration.

I have no illusions that the creation of MeJobs will hasten civility on the Blue, but I know it'd keep me from being an asshole if I thought I might use it to look for work.

Matt, are you waiting for it to be tested before you add Jobs to the topbar in the other sections or you just forgot?

Also, the white burns. For some reason (perhaps thin gray lettering) it burns much more than the other white sites (this comes from someone who spends a lot of time in gmail). It burnt so much that I waited 30 seconds thinking the CSS was loading before noticing it was intentional.

IndigoRain: IANAL, but, from what I've seen in cases like that, technically (specially if it's going to be on the books) you can't hire someone outside your home country to make you a logo, unless (1) they are legal to work for you in your country, which means, for the US, at least non-H1-B work permit or (2) they have an incorporated company that can export it to you (and are not in Cuba, NK, Sudan, etc). This is usually implied in a local jobs site (like monster, yahoo), but it's easy to forget in a site with an international crowd.

I don't know if you're still reading mathowie, but what about volunteering gigs? I am not in a position to hire people at my job, but I know we will be looking for volunteers/interns soon.

Also, what about posting jobs on behalf of someone else/opportunities forwarded to you? Is that in bad form?

This is great. The company I work for is looking for video logger/transcribers, so I'll ask my co-workers for a job description and post that. Also I second the "services offered" idea. I work part-time, and I'd love to flesh out my schedule with freelance work. I echo the request for "services offered." Perhaps it could be very simple - a one-line listing with the person's name and a few words about the skill - eg, writing, editing; for anything more, you would have to go to the users page. But a directory would be useful to scan.

Because if there is someone here that I have come to respect that is freelancing, I might actively try to find a project to work with them on. I'm a freelancer myself - I sometimes pass on projects that I don't have the skill set for. If I knew there was someone here that I could tap into, I might either try to collaborate or pass the lead along. A simple listing so that I knew whose user page to go to for more info would do the trick. Just a thought ...

I think it's because there's enough space for "Music" and "Jobs" to be on the same line. Looking at the code, you can just skip over floating the <dt> and just use display: inline.

Not that six posts is any indication, but if there's anything I've learnt so far, it is that I'll have to pick up AJAX asap, that posting something up on at MeFi projects might help, and oh... that I should get a sock-puppet account for times when I'm reaaallly pissed off.

Seriously :-D, interesting section; kudos for having it up. While I doubt I'll find any openings from South East Asia, for example, I'm hoping it'll be a great way to follow trends on the international job market.
