Sidebar says "CONTEST. Best post of the day wins $30, all August." Out of (by my count) 73 posts on August 23 and 24, there were none that were any good?

Yeah, Matt, I can't really say this without sounding like a jerk, but I'd gladly volunteer back my winnings (and any theoretical future winnings) in exchange for you & Jess picking the winners in a more timely fashion. I've visited the "Best Of" page only to see no updates more times than I can count. Speaking of things I'd glad forgoe my winnings in exchange for: how bout instead of the $30 just a gold star like the one my favorite yellow devil Stan Chin got back in the day?
posted by jonson at 7:03 PM on August 26, 2006

Oh come on. What's the rush? Each day's winners get announced eventually - like in a day or three; have some freaking patience.
posted by mediareport at 7:06 PM on August 26, 2006

I.e., we've seen these temporary glitches tons of times before - days with runners-up only, etc. It all gets sorted out.
posted by mediareport at 7:08 PM on August 26, 2006

have some freaking patience.

Oh for christ's sakes.

There is a 'winner' (but no runners-up) for August 25th (y2karl's excellent music post), but nothing for the either the 23rd or 24rth. Thus my question.

It all gets sorted out.

Well, then, that's just fine.

*laughs*

You've already spent that $30, stav, haven't you? Seriously, this has happened before; the "best of" page has been kind of a loveable mess all month.

Now, if you're looking for something *really* worth complaining about, how about the fact that jokey nonsense is now getting marked "best answer" and being favorited to death in AskMe? And is already spawning cheap imitation yuks. Oh joy. That sure bodes well for the future.

Mouse over the words 'none that were any good' in my post above. And give me a little fucking credit.

Oh joy. That sure bodes well for the future.

I've talked about unintended consequences in the past until my ass turned blue, to little avail. I give up on bitching about that short of shit, at least for now. It's a moderation issue.

I say this without emotion and no dog in this race whatsoever:

If you're going to have a daily challenge and get people stoked to compete for a daily prize, yes you should keep up with the winner announcements on a daily basis.

A 2-day lapse isn't the end of the world but it is bad form. Perhaps "every weekday" is in order?

jessamyn and I have been busy. I've taken two long trips and gotten sick, I think jessamyn has spoken at two conferences and attended at least one wedding. I have jessamyn's picks for the 23rd and 24th which I'll log later tonight. I picked the 25th one straight away because I didn't want to forget that one.

I didn't think of it as a contest where the timing of the results was all that important, but apparently I misjudged the reaction on that.

Were you sick over the fact that Code Baloo has only made six posts to the front page ever and that two of them won best post of the day? Because if so, you may have caught that from me. Where normal human beings have an immune system, I seem to have a vast reservoir of pettiness.

Yeah, I've been away from home 13 of the last 25 nights and I think made my picks for the 22nd and 23rd from the airport. I even set MeFi to think I live in Pacific Time, but I go to bed waaaayy before midnight Pacific which means my picks are delayed half a day to begin with. I know that we've been a bit slackerly but we are trying, and figured it was better to actually read the posts than just halfass it so we could be prompt. August seemed like such a good month for this contest but I don't think either one of us realized how much travelling the other one of us was doing. My apologies to those with the fidgets.

jonson: yes I am sick about Code Baloo, how about that?
mediareport: and also jokey favorited nonsense in AskMe I am sick about

The BPOD page is now current through the 25th.

He followed up with the corrected link, but now that link just goes to the thread top, because the comment in question was deleted (I don't know what it was, but it was the comment that immediately followed the first, faved, best-answered comment).

the Do Not Question Teh Mathowie In His Infinite Wisdom folks

Er, try the They've Explained The Reasons For These Glitches And Delays Previously Dummy Pay Attention to MetaTalk folks. dersins even used your exact schtick two weeks ago. The Do Not Question Teh Mathowie In His Infinite Wisdom folks haven't shown up in this thread yet.

So anyway, did y'all see what ResearchBuzz just posted about Askme?

The Answers services vary a lot in how useful they are. I don’t like Yahoo Answers so much because there’s a lot of stuff you have to wade through if you’re doing any kind of serious research. I’m not a big fan of Google Answers either...

I find of all the Ask-the sites out there I tend to prefer the Librarian/Reference type sites (it’s scary how many states now have Ask-A-Librarian services) and Ask Metafilter. AskMeFi because it tends to have interesting questions and thoughtful answers. (And occasionally, granted, whacked-out questions and lunatic answers.)

... whew, sorry, the bus was late 'cuz traffic was fucking brutal, and I had to go back to my apartment three times to make sure that I didn't leave the kettle on, until I realized I don't even own a fucking kettle so I had to stop by KettleTown but they didn't open 'til noon so I tried that new place, PotCity, but that really wasn't the same kind of store...

For the love of Christ, it's 12.22PM on a Sunday, I'm sitting here in my damn underpants thinking about putting the lid back onto the jar of salsa I opened last night, and even I don't have time to waste or the sense of entitlement required to demand an up to the minute, ripped from the headlines, following this story as it unfolds bloody Best Of List.

Finally, my future sock puppet has a name!

And if you read my comment under the light of a full moon in the presence of a virtuous maiden, you'll see that it was merely a tongue in cheek send-up of an Infinite Wisdom spiel. I do apologize for the sense of entitlement crack, that was a mite harsh even if I didn't mean it1.

I ain't got a pony in this race; I'm not in the running for the thirty smackers, and prefer to parse the front page proper and decide for myself what is and isn't 'The Best'.
Frankly, who the hell are these people to decide that?!? The Cats on a Scanner Guy and Pig Penis Lady?!? They're not the bosses of me2!!!

1The part about the underpants was and, sadly, still is true, and the salsa was actually a jar of honey garlic sauce, which I wound up closing some hours later.

2That's more tongue in cheekery. Please don't hurt me, admins.
