Comments on 12605

I posted a job listing on Jobs this week, and would love to be able to field questions and discuss the opening...why not allow posting to jobs entries?

How about one-way comments in each job thread? People can ask questions but only the original poster can create comments to address concerns.

I went back and forth on this for weeks. In the end I decided not to do comments because a lot of jobs might be seen as asking too much or paying too little, and I wouldn't think someone that posted a job listing would want their company maligned by people saying they're paying slave wages or something.

I thought about having moderated comments that only the original poster could approve/delete, but that just makes things more complicated.

Here's what I came up with for a solution: people that posted a job can edit the listing, so they can post updates if they get a lot of emailed questions.

Will there be any indication on the main jobs page that a listing has been updated?

I think jobs will end up like projects (not much going on) without the interaction.

True, jobs don't come up very often (just as projects take a long time to complete). An infrequently updated, but still useful site was my expectation. It won't harm its utility.

I never visit projects, not ever. I think the commenting thing is the reason that I was never turned on to it. On MetaFilter I almost always read the comments in the thread before deciding if I want to look at the links.

The reason I'll probably never visit jobs is because I have a hunch it will settle in to being all (or at least 90%) about friggin' New York and California. Which is pretty useless for people outside those states, let alone for people who are outside The States.

And lastly, the reason I don't visit music is that it makes me feel bad about never writing down and later recording any of the crazy songs I make up for my girlfriend when I'm driving her places in the car, or cooking dinner.

(I do not expect anyone to give a damn about my little gripes. The green and the blue are good enough fro me.)

It seems at least possible that someone might be interested enough in tapping the MeFi labor market to join just so they could post jobs. I would not be surprised to see jobs get pretty active.

Another (late) vote for comments, which would allow us to fix maddening/ironic/potentially-hilarious/interesting-comment-inducing stuff like this.

As a prime offender myself, I love malapropisms and nutty Freudian misspellings. But for the luvva pete, in a post about writing? No wonder the job doesn't pay!
