My world travels continue---i'll be in Cologne Oct 13-19, but apparently Bonn, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt (and other cities?) are all really close by.

Jesus Christ, amberglow, whose frequent-flier points did you pirate?

I can't imagine a "Canada meeting." Germany isn't so small that a "Germany meeting" is realistic, is it?
posted by five fresh fish at 5:50 PM on October 2, 2006

it's smaller than Canada and us, fff. From Cologne i can apparently be in like 3 or 4 diff countries within 2 hrs or so by train--way less if i fly.

Maastricht's close too--i've always wanted to go there...do we have any Maastricht Mefites?

Booger. Looks like I'll be in Berlin for work, but sometime next week only. :(

From Cologne i can apparently be in like 3 or 4 diff countries within 2 hrs - That's probably because Köln is close(ish) to the border, not because Germany is so small.

According to Google Maps, I'm "536 km (about 7 hours 14 mins)" away from Bonn, so this is a no-go. You might want to call it an NRW meetup instead.

Enjoy your stay! :-)

aw, mumble--i read that the area i'll be in (NRW) has the most population, most densely packed, with most cities close together, too.

roma, you have to tell airlines to have cheaper fares to Rome--i look all the time : >

that's weird--it's only 19euros to Maastricht, but 40 to come back?
posted by amberglow at 8:04 AM on October 3, 2006

Great! If I get to choose it would be early in the week, say monday or tuesday; I will travel by train and it's cheaper for me on weekdays. However, if others are at all able to join us perhaps saturday would be a more obvious choice. Maybe wait and see if there's some more interest and then settle on a day?
posted by goodnewsfortheinsane at 8:25 AM on October 3, 2006

ok--mon or tues is better for me anyway--i want the weekend in Cologne itself.
posted by amberglow at 10:15 AM on October 3, 2006

Excellent. You know what, I'll email some Benelux Mefites to see if they can come down. Shall we keep it at Vrijthof square for now, exact location TBD?
posted by goodnewsfortheinsane at 10:22 AM on October 3, 2006

good lord amberglow! there's just no stopping you ever! why Germany? ...and where else will you be stopping in Europe?

Alright amberglow, I sent out a few emails and sent a CC to you.

I'd love to meet Amberglow again, but Maastricht's too far away on a school night, I'm afraid.
posted by prolific at 11:19 AM on October 3, 2006

Sadly, I will be out of the country until the 20th. Thanks for the invite by mail, nevertheless. Have fun!

Yes, thanks for emailing goodnews, I wouldn't have noticed this thread otherwise.

I doubt I'll make it either, it's a little more travel than I have time for that week, but have a wonderful time!

amberglow: seems like folks are up for it in principle but would have trouble making it down to Maastricht (and back). Would it be an option to move the meetup to Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam or The Hague? Would be your pick - I think you've been to Amsterdam before. All four of these cities are within an hour away from one another, and it would lengthen your train journey (one-way, from Maastricht or other border point onward) by no more than an hour or two. That way we might actually get other people to show up. :)

If that doesn't work, Maastricht will still be on for me. Just let me know.

I think that might be a little too much for a daytrip--you guys should meet tho, definitely...We had a great Amsterdam meetup last time i was there...

Can you get to Aachen easily? I was thinking that might be a better daytrip for me this trip...i'll email you...
