Offensive gif in Askme thread October 6, 2006 8:55 AM   Subscribe

This kind of thing should result in an instaban.

Word. That's gross.

That was sort of tasteless, and stupid. A nice slap on the wrist just for being unable to understand what askmefi is about would probably be in order...

I think the poster's clear track record with women is punishment enough.

Unless of course sign wielding emoticons spurting ridiculous sexist crap is the kinda thing gals go for. Is it? 'Cause I could use some pointers.

Hmmm, great idea for a future "best post of the day" contest - three runners-up, one of whom has secret admin deletion powers.

you'll have to forgive us, ladies. boobie talk just gets us so excited. They're your secret weapons in the battle to cloud minds.

That should result in an instaban? A little hypersensitive on a Friday, aren't we? That's pretty damned mild.

You're not gonna get any pics if you're munging her nick and "grody".
posted by Plutor at 9:51 AM on October 6, 2006

Yes. That is not funny, insightful, or interesting in any fashion. Anyone who uses those icons or their animated counterparts should be burned at the stake, let alone in this context. Someone is coming to us asking for help with a major problem impacting their lifestyle and this little jerkoff thinks it would be hilarious to see some boobies? Welcome to the internet, are you 10 years old? Go back to your phpbb's or wherever these stock icons are acceptable forms of expression.

> i was just coming here to post the same. it was an animated gif.

That link takes me to a Yahoo/Flickr "Please sign in to Yahoo" password prompt. "Sign in to share photos or explore the world through Flickr..." What's going on? Do you have to log in to look at flickr photos now? Oh well, so long flickr, nice knowin' ya (briefly.) OTOH if I just go to the flickr front page there's no sign of any login requirement, but now I don't know where your pic is.

???

Did that to me too, jfuller. Stupid freaking Yahoo!.
posted by Alvy Ampersand at 9:56 AM on October 6, 2006

For jfuller and anyone else who can't see (I guess you have to be logged in at flickr??) it: a link to the screenshot.

I really wish people would stop fucking around in/with AskMe. This has nothing to do with boobs or animated gifs or this post in particular - just stop fucking up this good thing we have here. How much self-control do you really have to exhibit? It takes more effort to go find the gif and post it than it takes to exercise enough self-control not to.
posted by iconomy at 9:59 AM on October 6, 2006 [1 favorite]

Do you have to log in to look at flickr photos now?

Only if the person whose photos you're looking at chooses to have it that way -- and that long predates Yahoo!. (But direct links to the images themselves always work. Anyhow, it's just the "useless without pics" smiley thingy from earlier in this thread.)

I fail to see how one .gif satisfies all three of these criteria:

Bragging of assumed sexual prowess: Check
Disregarding the spirit of the Question: Check
Self gratifying anecdote: Check

(although I agree deleting it was a good idea.)
posted by jonmc at 10:05 AM on October 6, 2006

You only need to be logged in for the exact page that Naxos linked. You can see the screenshot in her photostream, or see the actual image without logging in. It's only the "all sizes" page you need to be logged in for.

I think French Fry might have confused the comment that's the subject of this thread with fvox13's comment just above. It's a little icky (TMI!!!!), but I'm not sure it disregards the spirit of the question....

Plutor, thanks for that. i would have linked it properly if i had known how. i had first uploaded the image to imageshack, but even for me it took forever to load, and i figured that imageshack would quickly poop-out after this thread had views on metatalk.

really though, what kind of an asshole trolls metafilter for tits?! even worse, it's the pedestrian, fark-forums-circa-1999-humor that is more pathetic than the inappropriateness.

i think you all are thinking way too hard about "motivations" for the user posting that animated gif...actual pictures wasn't the motivation, it was merely the desire to make that snark comment.

even worse, it's the pedestrian, fark-forums-circa-1999-humor that is more pathetic than the inappropriateness.

now this is subjective. to me, that animated gif was no more pedestrian than the shitting elephant or ceiling cat.

Trawling is with a net, trolling is with baited hooks on lines. I think either works for this particular metaphor.
posted by mr_roboto at 1:27 PM on October 6, 2006

*ahem* Gentlemen...

The reason that I posted the callout and think that a timeout is required in the very least (if not instant banination) was because I've seen how difficult it is for women with overlarge breasts to get any respect and be able to talk about how to get along with their big boobs. I mean, if you really need an example, just look at the past few snarks. I'd prefer to keep AskMe a safe place to talk about that kind of stuff, and I think people who intentionally post snarks like "omg post pix" in emotionally sensitive, sexual topics ... well, I have no tolerance for it, and I don't think that this community should either.

I would have thought of posting the exact same gif. It's funny, lighten up. Sure, take it out of the thread, but you hardly need to start up a posse.

It's funny, lighten up.

It's not funny in the context of the thread. It's not even merely flippant -- it's fundamentally disrespectful to the OP, given the physical and emotional distress she describes. But I dunno, you're the self-described empath; shouldn't you be the one pointing that out?

Some discipline of insomnus is certainly called for. A strongly-worded note from the board admins? Certainly. Time-out? Probably. The mystic and irrevocable Ban-Hammer? I dunno.

I am intensely curious to determine which justice, exactly, our mighty and fearless MattJessAdmins have meted out to the imprudent and insensitive sleepless boobhound we are all clucking our tongues at.

Which leads me to a pony request - Matt/Jess is it possible to have a member's current status displayed prominently on their personal (www.metafilter.com/user/XXXXX) page? I am a frequent reader of the Gray Page and check up on offending individuals, but there is no notation my web 1.0 eyes have noted that let me know what their doom may be.

scody, he's empathic for the person who posted the gif. Like a unidirectional speaker phone, he can only be empathic for one side of an argument at a time.

Nerts to that, if it was a 42ker(Sweet Christmas, 43 is right around the corner!) we'd have seen his real name, address, blood type, credit card number, and a Google Maps image of what could be him molesting an elderly woman by now.

There ought to some kind of site for guys like insomnus to go to... some sympathetic place that understands how hilarious boobies are, that maybe even tags posts as "boobies" so all the fellows can have a good laugh together.

But I guess that's just crazy talk.
