What's the point of this metatalk thread?
posted by dcjd at 11:05 AM on October 10, 2006

doohickie, she's asked how long it would take her to catch a'stomach bug' and/or food poisoning. not really the best worded question, but not bad either.

This MeTa works better without the hyperlink.

I guess the paranoia angle threw me off the point of the question. And apparently, angelmouse's boyfriend sees this in about the same light I do.
posted by Doohickie at 11:13 AM on October 10, 2006

I thought it was more of a "help me with my paranoia" thing. That was what I answered to, anyways.

At the risk of starting a pileon over here on my question, I posted it here instead of in thread because if I really *did* miss something (and since others were able to decipher the question better than I, so apparently that was the case), I didn't want to mess up the original question.

Isn't that what MeTa is for? I was just looking for clarification (did not intend it as a criticism). Lester's sock puppet boils the original question down nicely, I might add.

Now that I think about it, what is the point of life? Thank you for guiding me on this vector and remaining a motivating force towards the end, oh Hive Mind.

If I cannot sit around pondering vague assertions of psychological distress in the context of medical disorders that may or may not have been contracted from close contact with individuals who may or may not have experienced them previously in a given time frame than what, exactly, is my life worth? Nothing!

Doohickie, I also found it very poorly worded, it wasn't just you. I had to read it three times before I thought I knew what the question was and now realize I was entirely off base.

The point of the question is to demonstrate that getting rid of spell check was a poor choice.

Relax, think, call your doctor if you feel it's necessary or will be reassuring.

We need to get these printed up as postcards and auto-mailed to everyone who registers an account and pray to fucking god it hits their mailbox before they can touch foot on the green. On the back of the card you should be instructed to affix the note to whatever surface you may be facing that day, your steering wheel, your office CRT, the forehead of your significant other. Just in case you forget. Again.

I'm not sure whether the back of these cards should be printed with the same advice re: calling a lawyer, or whether it should be something more minimalist - perhaps just WWW.GOOGLE.COM in plain, block text.

Doohickie writes "The snarks largely landed here and the helpful answers landed in AxMe."

That's precisely where we disagree. There wouldn't have been snarks, and/or there would have been fewer and they would have been deleted, had you simply asked for clarification in the thread. As it is, this call-out clarifies nothing and provides a forum for the kinds of comments which, while I agree with them, are forbidden in AskMe.

It's not like it would have been any more disruptive in the thread to ask the question than to post the MeTa link, both require a comment which is not strictly an answer.

Personally, it's easier to type like a normal person than it is 4 me 2 type kewl (ugh, that was rough). Not to mention I don't think we come on here to do brain teasers. I think the headline and a related question would be fine, but this one is a little out there. "Help me with my paranoia" does not equate to "Will I get sick and if so, when?" in my book.

What is the problem, the 'I'm proud to have been raised by wolves' typing style or the silly unanswerable question?

Unless we institute some kind of spelling/literacy test before people get in, why not just email the person and say we try to use the full keyboard here?

Or we could be jerkasses and have a little 'mefi wants you to try your best to spell words and use the shift key or we are going to give you a hard time about it' thing on the post page. Fine with me, the state of education is simply deplorable these days, really fogs my monocle.

Yes, the wording of the question was abhorrent and will haunt my nightmares. But translated?

My boyfriend had what he thinks was food poisoning, starting in the early hours of yesterday morning. Quick onset of diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pains. He was feeling well again by late evening. I have a severe phobia of being sick (as well as other anxiety issues) and have been panicking that it was a contagious stomach bug. When am I likely to know for sure?

Surprise, it's a typical AskMe question! And I think the responses to this version would have been quite different.

It's actually apostrophæ

Well, actually, the plural of apostrophe 'a figure of speech, by which a speaker or writer suddenly stops in his discourse, and turns to address pointedly some person or thing, either present or absent' should be apostrophæ, since it's from Greek αποστροφή, the plural of which is αποστροφαί. But the plural of apostrophe 'the sign (') used to indicate the omission of a letter or letters' is correctly apostrophes, since that apostrophe is a borrowing of the (identically spelled) French word. As the OED says, the punctuation term "ought to be of three syllables in Eng. as in French, but has been ignorantly confused with the prec. word." So if you want to be truly, unbearably correct, you should pronounce it "apostrof." And since the French word is from Greek απόστροφος, whose plural is απόστροφοι, the English word should be apostrophus, with a plural apostrophi. This has been your Pedantic Post of the Day.
