Someone added the tags "penis" and "vagina" to this post. I'm unable to remove them.

See here, probably.

It was presumably an admin trying to make the tags more helpful: see this post for a similar recent question.

damn, too slow! And to think I almost previewed...
posted by jacalata at 4:54 PM on November 26, 2006

It was probably Matt and Jessamyn, respectively.

Hi, it was me. Do you really want me to remove them? I just thought it was a cool post and good tags might keep someone from doubleposting it.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 4:58 PM on November 26, 2006

Remove that penis immediately, jessamyn!

If not me, who? If not now, when?

Buncha pricks and cunts, man.

I'll happily take jessamyn's penis.

Though I'm not quite sure where I would put it.

It's amazing to me that some people take tags to be some kind of expression of their unique personality rather than aids to people trying to find posts.
posted by languagehat at 5:13 PM on November 26, 2006

why, hat? Generally speaking, in the emotional tug of war between helpfulness and narcissism, narcissism generally wins. That's not exactly news.
posted by jonmc at 5:17 PM on November 26, 2006

And jonmc would know!

Thank you, I'll be here all night.

I think tags are both aids to finding and expression. I am not sure it is necessary, but the issue does keep coming up. Perhaps a little notation could be provided for those tags added by the admins to distinguish them from the tags added by the original poster? I am not really in favor of this though. I really don't think they should be that expressive. The primary function is truly as a finding aid, and if in the process of serving that end they can add some creative expression, then fine. However, some people add silly tags that will never be used as finding aids. As long as that is not overdone, I guess I have no problem with that either.

More helpful tags = good.

The state of tags at MetaFilter is beyond annoying. They are used for making jokes rather than as an aid to searching. This post about a comprehensive archive of the writings of Charles Darwin, for example, is tagged with "monkey's-uncle" (punctuated, even!), "beetles" and "earthworms", but not "darwin". The purpose of such tags can not possibly be to help in searching the MeFi archives; they are only there for the amusement of the poster. More hilarious than useful, but not much of either.
I support the proposal made several days a go for a squadron of tag librarians to run amok amongst the archived posts, tagging at well. If this is unacceptable to those artists whose unspeakably precious tags should be protected as free speech, maybe the additional tags could be called "keywords" to protect their sensibilities.

Changing subject, why do you want to remove jessamyn's penis and vagina, four panels?
posted by nowonmai at 5:48 PM on November 26, 2006

Shouldn't a BBC tag be added also?

and sex?

and studyofsex?

and definitely vaginalcam and peniscam?

This is a problem why?
posted by delmoi at 6:03 PM on November 26, 2006

I dunno, jessamyn; you added "penis" and "vagina" but not "sex" or "nsfw," both of which are used far more frequently? If you've decided to add tags, fine, but maybe the least you can do is check with the poster first? Or does it happen too often for that?
posted by mediareport at 6:03 PM on November 26, 2006

Oh, and four panels, why didn't you tag your post?
posted by mediareport at 6:05 PM on November 26, 2006

This is a problem why?

Not a problem so much as an opportunity to bitch, dude.
posted by jonmc at 6:06 PM on November 26, 2006

I'd think if you were planning on posting about the BBC strapping cameras on a penis and vagina, penis and vagina likely would be the sort of tags you'd search for dupes. Generic 'sex' would likely turn up a lot of stuff that isn't what you're looking for.
posted by jacquilynne at 6:08 PM on November 26, 2006

Also, as was pointed out in the thread, this isn't from the BBC (Channel 5, IIRC).
posted by sbutler at 6:12 PM on November 26, 2006

but maybe the least you can do is check with the poster first

In a perfect world, yeah, but the admins might not have enough time to do that for everything.

As for it not being the BBC, should a BBC tag still go in there, since the post says it's from the BBC and that's probably how many people remember it?

This is the second MeTa on this in a week. Perhaps you could make the tag-removal error page more explicit? Heck, a link to this post would clear things right up... or a cheeky insult about tagging and the categorical imperative.

Jessamyn also posted an animated gif of a penis moving into a dead animal, so typing the word "penis" is pretty mundane at this point.

It was a link. You guys act like I inlined it or something.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 10:46 PM on November 26, 2006

It was indeed a link. I am also guilty of misremembering the event as though it was inlined.

I'm not entirely sure why this is so, but it perhaps has something to do with an admin linking to cocked up chicken. On cue. Reminder to self: Do not taunt librarians, for they truly know what something wicked this way comes.

Combine that with the animated variation inlined by someone more irascible and it seems to muddle the memories of more than a few of us.

nowonmai : "If this is unacceptable to those artists whose unspeakably precious tags should be protected as free speech, maybe the additional tags could be called 'keywords' to protect their sensibilities."

If we're going to rename tags (which I certainly doubt we will), I'd say "search terms" would be way better.

anotherpanacea : "Perhaps you could make the tag-removal error page more explicit?"

Or the error. Instead of "Looks like you're trying to delete tags from/to the wrong post", how about "Looks like you're trying to delete tags from/to the wrong post, or tags added by a moderator".
posted by Bugbread at 6:07 AM on November 27, 2006

knave: Jessamyn also posted [perhaps a mere link to] an animated gif of a penis moving into a dead animal.

Not really sure how to deal with what happend just now. Having read that. First I thought I was going to have a pee or something, you know out of my willy. But I didn't have a pee pee. Then, all of a sudden, it totally got out of hand. The fire-fighters laughed and then left. And here I am with all this mess to clean up. I hope mummy comes home late tonight...

Actually, I would prefer it if one of the admins could edit the post text so that it's accurate. Just changing "The BBC" to "Channel 5" would do it.
