Ok, so I'm really a MeFi n00b even though I pretend I'm not. Is there a list somewhere of what projects I have voted for somewhere?

You know, I can see my comments and posts and stuff, but I "bookmarked" a project by voting, and now I can't find it.

Or am I just missing the "I voted for..." link?

This is one of several reasons why voting for projects should be merged with the favorites system, at least in terminology. They're conceptually identical.

I totally agree, and I'm surprised this never occurred to me before - when you "vote" for a project, it should be identical (in the db) to "favoriting" a comment or thread.

I'd recommend two changes.

1. list votes on projects like favorites/comments [still keep the big number though, I think they're useful]
2. totally remove the "fantastic post" option from the flagging queue and just have favorites serve the same purpose as (formerly) fantastic.

I agree with languagehat - I really liked being able to use favorites to bookmark on-site, but since "favorites" are widely used simply to show visible appreciation for a post or comment, that dilutes its usefulness for bookmarking.

It would be great to have those two uses separated out - but if that's not feasible, perhaps add an extra step: when you "favorite" something, you go to a page where there's a checkmark box that asks "do you also want to bookmark this favorite?" Then only those you specifically request to bookmark are on your profile page; the rest are just marked to show that you liked that post/comment.

So what are those of us who want to bookmark comments and threads supposed to do? I really wish Matt would change the name "favorites," but he's mulish about it.

Agreed, but yeah, it's not going to happen. As such, IMHO, the best alternative is to use favoriting to show appreciation, and standardize on one social bookmarking system (read: del.icio.us) and set of tagging conventions for bookmarking. In particular, on del.icio.us, people seem to use "mefi" and "metafilter" to tag MeFi posts, with "metafilter" being significantly more popular. There's more variety for AskMe posts, with "askmefi", "askme", "askmetafilter" and "ask.metafilter" all being used, in order of popularity. Again, it might be nice to standardize on "askmefi" because of inertia, or "askmetafilter" for typographic consistency with the described tagging patterns for the blue.

But this is metatalk, and we can't make anyone do anything.
