MeFiNYC : Tomorrow night, my and Navelgazer's shoegaze-inspired rock band, the 21 Gun Solution, will be performing at Club Midway in the East Village at 9pm. We're opening for NaNuchka, who just won The Deli Magazine's Band of the Month poll.

Club Midway is located at 25 Avenue B between 2nd and 3rd. The cover is $8, which will buy you an evening of fresh, original music, as well as my eternal gratitude.

ThePinkSuperhero, that is in fact a different band (out of Cleveland) who, as far as my research can tell, sucks a lot. (Though their production values are a lot better than ours as of yet. Try this link.

A big thank you for the link, though! I read "shoegaze-inspired rock band" and that sparked my curiosity, figured you hung out somewhere along the Spacemen 3/Loop/Swervedriver axis. But listening to the songs on your MySpace page I'm mostly thinking "White Hassle", but that's a good thing. Alas, stupid Atlantic ocean, separating us. I'd be at Club Midway in a heartbeat, if I could!

Midway used to 22's of Colt 45. Not sure if they still do, but I'd support any bar that does that. I tried to get them to upgrade to Ballantine once.

Yeah, that's such a terrible idea. If people started posting their gigs to Metatalk, then (gasp) a bunch of people from Metafilter might show up and (gasp) meet each other. And then it would be like one of those... what are they called... Metafilter Gatherings?

Too bad there isn't a category for that on Metatalk or anything like that.

Afroblanco, I think the sniping and bitching is totally justified by your clear record of systematic abuse of Metatalk for these purposes. Your posting history is freakin' chock full of gig announcements.

Which itself might not be enough to deserve censure, but considering what an epidemic of gig announcements we've been treated to around here lately—every hour on the hour, it seems like!—well, someone has to put their foot down. An example must be made, before the very California that is Metatalk slips, bubbling, into the Pacific under the tremulous abuse of you and your ilk, and takes our beloved callouts and deletion complaints with it.

So it's off to your room to think about what you've done. Chop chop, no moping or you'll skip dinner, too.

The crunchland rule of thumb is approximately what we go by, though there is no hard and fast rule.

We're smart; I think we'll be able to tell the difference between a profit making venture for the poster and something like a concert or an art show.

I maintain my position re: grumpusness, but acknowledge that my take on it depends on the fact that we obviously disagree.

No. You're right. No reason to think that it might get away from us. Everyone should be able to push any old event that they want, and call it a Metafilter Gathering. Even if it's something 99.9% of the people who read the site can't even participate in. Heck, why not post your paypal accounts, so we can pay the cover charge from the comfort of home?

Metafilter Gatherings are for metafilter gatherings. Not for your band gigs.

Metafilter Gatherings are for metafilter gatherings. Not for your band gigs.

I believe that there's the possibility of overlap. I also believe that a small trickle (and that is what we're talking about here, as far as I can see from actual threads in evidence) of borderzone things will not hurt Metatalk. And, of course, Matt and Jess can nuke if they object. You can flag and email to try and precipitate said deletion, if you feel passionately about it.

Or you can jump at the opportunity to mock your fellow users.

To put it more directly: what bothers me is not your objection to the possibility of Metatalk being flooded by gig postings. I don't disagree with that position. It would be bad. I'm not arguing that sentiment, and I think we agree about a lot of these things at the core.

What bothers me is that you evidenced that objection by taking a snarky jab at an announcment that you can't possibly know, and would be hard-pressed to reasonably suspect represents any looming vanguard. If fifty gig announcements show up this week, I'll eat my hat and grant you your presience, but from right here it seems like you were just being a jerk.

And really, the only reason I posted it here is because I've met a lot of cool people on MeFi and I genuinely wanted to see them there.

There was some discussion of that idea fairly recently, though Matt didn't really seem hot on it.

If I knew how I'd volunteer to code it, but it seems like it could be handled pretty simply. Add a Post A Gig page that allows you to input the following: Band Name, Club Name, Address, City, State, Time, Cost and Other Info (to list who you're playing with, etc.) The sidebar would include all shows for the next 30 days, something like this:

Upcoming Mefi Music Gigs
Dec. 4, 2006
Afroblanco - New York, NY

Dec. 8, 2006
InfidelZombie - Los Angeles, CA
cortex - Portland, OR

Each of those lines could link to a page that dumps out the show data, maybe with a link to all songs posted by that user on Music.

I love the idea of gigs.metafilter.com - unfortunately, I just used up my 1 per 4 day metatalk quota or I'd suggest it in the top level!
