Miguel Cardoso Interview December 13, 2006 3:16 PM   Subscribe

So I have this friend in Lisbon and she was telling me last night that Miguel Cardoso was on TV and she caught it on her videophone and emailed it to me and I uploaded it to YouTube and....well...Here it is!

He looks like a cuddly version of my dad speaking a crazy moon language. So awesome.

What, no crushed velvet smoking jacket? Tragic!

That cellphone is crappy. It made everything sound like gibberish.

And then to be followed by 'The self-stirring mug'. What an honor - cool!

Should post it to Flickr...

*mind explodes*

What, you mean he wasn't in the Batcave?
posted by greycap at 3:37 PM on December 13, 2006

Oh, sure. Lisbon gets the credible talent, while here in the States, we get Hitchens on the tube. That's just wrong.

That was great. Thanks to you and your friend for taking the trouble!

That was like something out of "Lost".

He seems mildly exasperated by the failure of the general populace to realize the obvious bullshit of something-or-other-in-Portugese.

He seems "strobey-er" than I expected.

He's more annoying live. Hard to believe.

Cool, the fact that it's been recorded by pointing the camera at the TV adds to the effect somehow. Wonder what he's talking about?

That makes all of his comments about a million times better.

Damn. This was the bit where they asked me about MetaFilter and, specifically, my relationship with vacapinta and I'm afraid I lost control.

According to my friend:

"he's saying...portugal is such a tiny country...but we have fun facts... like we were the ones that introduced curry to india"

That clip is NSFEpileptics... whoa.

up to now, I imagined Miguel as a bone-thin, extremely hairy, unshaven naked man in a dark apartment talking in broken English to cardboard cutouts of 1930's Hollywood celebrities as if they were alive -- a vision that always provoked merry laughter.

vacapinta's friend has ruined my beautiful dream -- if indeed the person in the video is Miguel of course, and not just a less windbaggy, better-fed impersonator.

So, it is pretty easy to figure out what the exposure time on that camera is.. Around 0.01-0.02s? (1/25Hz x blanking x relative height)

Wikipedia says.. The Sunny f/16 Rule? okay..

I just love that vacapinta discusses popular characters from his favorite community weblog with his friend in Lisbon. I mean, I know a couple people in London, but if Pretty_Generic ever makes it onto the BBC I doubt they'd know to call me about it.

I think that is really Brian Atene.

Are you sure that isn't Quonsar?

You, sir, have BLOWN MY MIND.

Weird that they translated it into portuguese.

Thats just it. He was brought up between us first in the context of a well-known author/celebrity that I happened to have heard of.

It blows her mind that he is well-known in this little American weblog community and that that community is oblivious to his stature in Portugal.

I should know already.
But will there be a cameo?

What, you mean he wasn't in the Batcave?

The Batcave is in Moscow.

Much older, fatter and with a higher pitched voice than I imagined.

Reminded me a bit of Benny Hill.

Don't shoot me, but he reminded me just a tad of a cuddly Portuguese Rush Limbaugh.

*ducks*

Fake. CGI'd.

MiguelCardoso has never existed. The MC persona was begun as a childish prank by dhartung and quonsar.

Unfortunately for them it rapidly got out of control, to the point that they had to learn Portuguese and then write novels in the language to keep the charade going.

This video is merely their latest way to put off the inevitable day they are found out and destroyed by years of accumulated MeTa snark.

that is beyond awesome. migs is adorable! i &hearts the retro glasses. i imagined him as a moodier, surlier man; but the real migs is built for (hugs).

I didn't see a brandy snifter or a cigar.

That almost exactly the way I pictured him, except with aviator frames. And a cigar.

Thank you.

Miguel was always the smoothest and the most eloquent of posters here. I wish my Portugese were better, OK, I wish I understood more than one work of Portugese. Too bad my brother in-law from the Azores is not able to make our party this weekend.

This is so great... I was feeling sad watching the rain fall in Minneapolis at the end of december this evening... oddly similar to the cold rain on the night Sebastian dies in Blade Runner - thinking about global warming and the end of life as we know it on our little green planet. I'm glad miguel is doing his ever optimistic thing in Portugal.
