Will you take a credit card? December 19, 2006 8:22 PM   Subscribe

I see MeFi still only accepts PayPal. I was going to buy a friend an account tonight, but I stopped using PayPal a long time ago because I think they're pretty hideous and unethical. Will you ever accept credit cards, Matt? Is there not enough demand to make it worthwhile?

Oh, and I realize that credit card companies can be hideous and unethical, but there's both regulation and some degree of transparency/redress, whereas if PayPal fucks you, you're just fucked.

Has it changed? I used my card to get my membership. PayPal has credit card capabilities.

I know, lekvar - I don't want a PayPal account, I don't want them to have my information in any way, shape, or form. I trust http://hellogoodsirpleasepayingyourbillswithcreditcardtrustworthyservice.nigeria more than I do PayPal, is all.

You can send either one of us a check, or five well-concealed dollars. I'm not sure what Matt's long term plans are re: payment.

You can pay me in unused US postage stamps. I think Matt still prefers normal types of currency. I am not putting you on.

He no longer takes credit card payment through Amazon? My membership came without fee, but we sometimes used to donate to the cause. I used the Amazon option as I too hate Paypal, even though they are now owned by Amazon.

jessamyn, can I pay you in used US postage stamps or unused Canadian postage stamps? What's the exchange rate?

I thought they were owned by ebay...?

Yeah, unless I missed something and Amazon bought both Ebay and PayPal....

Ebay bought PayPal but neither is owned by Amazon.

Paypal is not owned by Amazon, nor Amazon by Ebay, but Ebay is the owner of Paypal.

Are you sure '[ninja turtle face] give a gift account' is working through PayPal? I impulsively went through the process on account of this comment and haven't heard anything since. Is that because I have no friends and so gifted myself and sock puppets are "not liked'?

I know a couple of people that are (or were) dying to get in to MeFi, but they hated PayPal more.

What about Google Checkout? Is that as sucky? Does it integrate into a Google Adwords account well?

What about a PO Box for snail-mailing checks and/or filthy lucre?

Jessamyn, do you accept Subway stamps?

I'm gonna use this as a venue to plead for help on my gift account purchase-- the recipient never received the email, and now I can't use their email for a do-over, cos the gift account system thinks the email address in question has been successfully used. Please hope!

I also was going to buy a gift account earlier this week, but balked at PayPal. It took me a month just to get them to close the account I created to get my own MetaFilter account. It's mostly having the account with them that bothers me. They also do straight out credit card processing now, which is more trustworthy to me.

How about Canadian Tire Dollars? Will you accept those?

Do they? Last I checked you had to create a paypal "account" on your CC in order to get in to metafilter..

vacapinta is giving away a few accounts in the "give a gift account" MeTa thread, fwiw.

delmoi: No. I set up the credit card processing with PayPal at my last job. It works just like it does at other sites with no indication it's PayPal and no signup with PayPal process.

You don't have to have a paypal account to use paypal anymore. You can just use any major credit card and it processes just like any other merchant account.
