Did anyone else get an email yesterday from "a new member" saying you had a "friendly profile" and asking you to post a question for him since he'd "just joined" and couldn't yet post an askme? Monochromaticgirl and I both did and thought it was odd--especially since we don't have very friendly profiles.

Maybe we're just jerks, but we thought it was odd.

Yeah please let us know either who the person is or whether you see the question in AskMe. The (short) waiting period is there for a reason and we don't want new members just signing up to email a bunch of people willy-nilly; it's got a bad faith ring to it, though perhaps they're just clueless.

A few minutes after my first post to metafilter last month, I got an email from user ParisPramus who complimented my post headline and in the email subject and gave one sentence of generic looking personal information. Is this normal also?

There's nothing particularly weird about emailing someone to say something (generally nice) about their mefi post or comment. I know this with absolutely certainty because I do it sometimes, and I never do anything remotely weird.

The initial thing here sounds kind of weird, though. Seconding the desire to know details about the request.

All this sounds so familiar. Just last night, shortly after I posted a thread about my milk delivery route, I got an email from somebody named sexybutterfly18 , and the subject line said "hey u milkman ur the hottest." Is this normal? The bodytext said something about how she really wanted to "get to know me better." Has this happened to other people? I wrote her back and said I'd like to get to know her, too. Is this usual? She wrote back with her phone number and said she hopes to "hawp n my milktruck." Is this typical? I met her for coffee and it turned it to be jessamyn in a Tigger suit. Has this been the case for anybody else?

It was pretty uncomfortable, really. I was so bothered by it that I signed up for a new account to ask the green about it pseudonymously—but it turns out there's a week waiting period, so I looked for some friendly profiles and sent some emails. No reply yet, though. Mefites are jackasses.

Well, I just checked my e-mail and all I had was one from somebody called "hhgk949ud3ehiduez" saying my application for a 2nd mortgage was approved. Funny thing is, I don't remember applying for a second mortgage. Does this seem odd to anyone?

I'm going to imagine you went all MacGuyver and checked access to known recipients' profiles in a limited time frame, matched the IP logged therein against signup/login records, and fingered the culprit on a match. If the process was more mundane than that, please don't tell us.

Not knowing how to react and filled with sexual anxiety omg what if her previous guy could fill a pint glass I forwarded the email onto the entire userbase.
