MeFi Music - is it only for music? January 27, 2007 7:48 PM   Subscribe

MeFi Music - is it only for music? I've been writing some short (>7 mins) stand-up skits recently, and was wondering if mp3's of same would be an acceptable music post, especially as the feedback would be extremely useful...

I mean (<7mins). Oops.

Wouldn't you be afraid that people would steal your material?

Doesn't that open the door for spoken word and all other recordables?
posted by dobbs at 8:08 PM on January 27, 2007

I don't see anything wrong with that. How about podcasts? Radio theater?
posted by loquacious at 8:17 PM on January 27, 2007

How about podcasts?

And then people can post individual blog posts to Projects! It'll be awesome.

Seriously, what's vague about "Metafilter Music"? Post standup to own website; link website in profile, Projects.

I wouldn't mind seeing spoken word stuff. Standup's a little more iffy, I think.

popechunk reads you today's comics page, episode 78.....

It's not music qua music, but the site could be renamed sound.metafilter.com

Depends on #1 really. I would probably listen to it.

rock and/or roll, like it says in the tagline, yo!

This came up a few times when the site was new, but I have to draw the line somewhere at "music" and yeah, sorry, but spoken word stuff, comedy, and found sound recordings don't really fit too well with everything else. Why not put all your standup on a blog and post that to projects?

violins make music and would be fine, the rock thing was a joke.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 8:47 PM on January 27, 2007

Yes, I suppose the clue is in the name, really.

Also, Seize The Day, no, 90% of stand-up is in the delivery rather than the material, so that's really not a worry. Unfortunately it's the delivery at which I'm not that great, as I'm mainly a writer, but I like the idea of a Projects blog site once I've got enough material together - trying to get a 10 minute entry a week done would be a great motivator...

I thought ambient sounds were OK, or did that change?
posted by delmoi at 12:29 AM on January 28, 2007

I believe ambient is OK, AmbienĀ® is not.

Jon, I had similar ambitions long ago in the pre-Internet age, and open mike nights were, are and always will be a total pain for those of us more into the writing than live performing. But the place I did it sometimes had 'surprise guests' when the wannabes were finished, and without that, I never would've met Robin Williams and Dana Carvey.

Well, it depends, you know? if you are sitting down while playing the violin, it's fine, it's the standup part that has been ruled out.

Thanks for the clarification, Matt. I've wondered about this myself, and I must say I'm a little disappointed. Surely nobody's waiting for lengthy soliloquys about the contents of one's lunchbox or binaural ambience from the streets of Phaic Tan, but we toyed around with the podcast idea before, and I had quite a bit of fun with it.

I'd love it if there was a place for this kind of thing on Metafilter.

I had a spoken word idea, but realized it wouldn't make the cut - I would just read out Metafilter threads, with my added commentary and witty repartee.

goodnewsfortheinsane: "I'd love it if there was a place for this kind of thing on Metafilter."

Well, given that Google Pages and Projects both exist, it seems only obvious that someone could easily throw a bunch of mp3s / mpgs up on a Google Page and put it up on Projects. This would probably take all of twenty minutes, too.

I don't know if this is kosher, but it seems easy, and it seems like the thing to do. It would really enrich Projects, too, and Projects always needs enrichment. I hope anybody who's looking to get their stuff out there will do this.

Well, koeselitz, I feel it should be an integral part of the site. Else how would we ever get to hear Anonymous celebrate his 1500th post with a Metafilter Minute?

So the consensus is that if he were to post stand up that would be bad, but if he were to sing the same thing badly it would be ok?

I say let it be all sound files that you've made yourself. Hell, even sound effects? One man's poison is another man's Metal Machine Music.
