Why is this still up? Isn't it basically a LOLPERVERTS post? [mi]

Oh, they're gonna delete it, they just can't think of a funny enough deletion reason.

inconsequentialist, I said this to you in the thread. It's a tabloid article about one guy's turn-ons. To me, it wasn't even funny.

It's not that I think you're a jerk for thinking this is funny, clearly, a lot of people were interested in the article. I recently posted something similar and so I can relate to posting an article that made me laugh even though it didn't introduce any new ideas, wasn't funny to everyone, and basically existed to make fun of someone, but for all those reasons, I could see why my link was deleted.

So what I'm trying to understand is why this link is still up?
posted by serazin at 9:41 PM on March 11, 2007

Lots worse have survived. Seems pretty borderline, to me. I mean, it never would have stood muster in the Golden Age of MetaFilter, but it's not too bad by today's standards.

if we cant make fun of perverts then the terrorists have already won

It's still up because at a glance I didn't think it was mind-bogglingly bad and neither Matt nor Jess has thought so either, assuming they've even seen it, which they might not have because Matt's at SXSW and Jess is still on the other side of the planet.

I didn't realize it was just a straight link to The Sun, honestly. Fairly lame, but the thread didn't turn into an insane bitchfest and on a lazy Sunday that's half-way to perfect.

Gotcha cortex. People are busy, it's not horrible, it got by under the radar.

I can think of many worse posts that were left up, serazin. Consider not stressing out over it.

I'd like to use this callout as an opportunity to tell inconsequentialist to please stop posting so many metafilter threads. You seem to be on some kind of posting kick and all of your posts are very sub par and barely post-worthy. Please lay off for a while. Or in other words, let the game come to you.

It's a she actually. And, yes. Although your comment just popped the thought into my head that maybe this is some kind of grand joke on her part. Doesn't matter much though, the joke wouldn't really be worth continuing.
posted by puke & cry at 10:46 PM on March 11, 2007

I think there are nicer ways to go about saying that, pukey. After all, who gives a shit what you think?
by the way, i agree
posted by phaedon at 10:54 PM on March 11, 2007

I think a couple people care. Maybe. Ok, probably not.

Anyway, upon further consideration, inconsequentialist says she's a grad student in philosophy so I suppose there's a large possibility that her terrible posting record is some kind of experiment.

I don't think very highly of philosophers anyway.
posted by puke & cry at 11:04 PM on March 11, 2007

Hmm, I'd say the posts (most of them anyway) have been rather interesting and have generated some decent discussion as have most of the people that have viewed them or commented on them.

As far as this particular post is concerned, I can't say that I ever had the explicit thought that it was funny or humorous but rather intriguing. At least it was to me. If people think that it was some attempt on my part to ridicule someone's tastes, then they're mistaken about my intentions. If there are people that thought the actions discussed were ridiculous, that's another matter.

I don't think very highly of philosophers anyway.

No one really does.

I've been drinking, not that it needs stating, never mind.

I don't think very highly of philosophers anyway. Spoken like a true philosopher.

As a funnier fellow once said "
It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt"

. . . did i mention I had been drinking?

You must be one of those self-tortured philosophers with the whipping of chains and nashing of teeth, hm? That's great.

So are you going to stop posting pedestrian bullshit on metafilter or not?
posted by puke & cry at 12:08 AM on March 12, 2007

inconsequentialist, I just want to be explicit that I don't have a generalized issue with you or your posts. puke & cry's comments are not where I was going, and that kind of personal attack really brings down this community as a whole.

I linked to my own deleted thread mostly to point out that I can relate to finding a link that initially sparks your fancy, but which, on further reflection, probably doesn't make a great post.

What I mean by LOLPERVERTS is, that although it is unusual for someone to want to fuck a car, linking to an article which exists solely to point out that behavior as bizarre, titillating and funny basically reinforces an attitude that unusual sexual practices are somehow wrong or at least not as good as 'the old fashioned way'

And I get that that was not your intent, or the message you were trying to send.

Not really. I'm generally a very happy person.

So are you going to stop posting pedestrian bullshit on metafilter or not?

I'll continue to follow the guidelines and trust that the admins and self-policing community continue to do what they do well. I can't guarantee you personally of course that my posts and/or comments will always suit your tastes.

Yeah, I understand and I'm sorry if it was taken that way.

So I guess that means you'll keep posting, huh? Well, do everyone a favor and try not to post the first shiny thing that sticks in your head. The front page has enough toils without your brain dead tripe contributing to it.

I'm not sure why exactly you decided to start posting so much, or why you thought that was a good idea, but your posts are complete shit. Maybe you should dig a little harded for your posts than looking at the cnn front page.

I say "let it stay." What part of "Mechanic: I have sex with cars" is not completely hilarious?

Someday, she'll post something as groundbreaking as the Maurie and Connie Got Cancelled song, eh Bob? Or maybe how to transform your photos into iPod ads?

In the bar that is MeTa, I'm now the regular yelling "Shut the fuck up, Bob."
posted by klangklangston at 1:49 AM on March 12, 2007

It wasn't flagged much, I saw it and thought it was sort of silly but not terrible. LOL PERVERTS isn't really the same as LOL XIANS because those threads are unlikely to start super flame wars, but I do get your point serazin and we keep an eye out for those sorts of things generally.

Just to be clear, that Maurie and Connie Got Cancelled song was COMPLETELY AWESOME. Almost but not quite unendurable. Best of the frickin' web. I dunno about other stuff, but let's not pick on the Best of the Frickin' Web, okay?

I liked it. I find it is interesting to know about people's different sexual fixations. It gives me stuff to try. So I say no to porn deletions for their own sake.

puke & cry for someone who last posted a link 8 months ago, regarding an obscure song about an obscure cancelled Canadian TV show, you sure are angry about inconsequentialist's fledgling fpps. If you hate these posts so much, (and I personally can't see anything particularly irksome about them), why don't you head on over to Pipes, and start filtering your MeFi experience.

I liked inconsequentialist's verrines post, but most of her recent run of newspaper article posts haven't been that great. She does seem to be on one of those brand-new "must post a lot" kicks, which can be great, but often do end up with the person scouring the net frantically for something worth posting on a given day, which too-often ends in a nothing newspaper article (Steven Hawking going into outer space!) being thought post-worthy when it probably isn't. Less single newspaper stories and more cool stuff on the Web, etc.

posted by scalefree at 10:19 AM on March 12, 2007

It was right before October 21, 2005. I may have to check my Golden Age of MetaFilter guide book but i think that was the date it all ended. ;)

You should also take into account that a certain number of posts must be made for puke & cry's ilk to satisfy their jones for a good bitch and give them an opportunity to bully someone. On that score, you're doing great. Keep up the good work.
