I was trying to remember enough high school physics to calculate the forces involved, but damn.

Dear AskMetafilter: Is mixing Chlorine and Ammonia dangerous?

JJG: !!!

Nice. I was just going to post a question asking if it would be dangerous if you put peanut butter on your balls and locked yourself in a room with a hyena that's high on angel dust. I hope jjg stays around to answer my question.

I dunno, I think it might be a bit much to expect jjg to find a hyena and some angeldust, track you down, pb your teabag, and convince you to lock yourself up. Let's not get crazy.

With dios' reputation around here, I'm sure other volunteers will quickly step up.

How has he possibly stayed around this long with that kind of can-do attitude?

Yes, but did it taste like a vagina?

AC/DC. It tastes like a vagina rapidly alternating with a teabag.

This raises a question. If the outcome had been different, would we have all moved up a #?

Dear AskMetafilter: I am willing to cut my right hand off to settle a debate with someone on the internet. Will this hurt?

*turns on pedantry*

AC/DC. It tastes like a vagina rapidly alternating with a teabag.

At that point of the adapter, it would be straight DC, as it's converted in the transformer laying on the floor. So it'll probably taste like rectified vagina.

Good thing he didn't respond to this question.

Talk about awkward.

I used to work with a guy who, AFAICT, never told tall tales. He said that way back when, when he was an electrical engineer or some such thing, they'd test voltage with their tongues. Like, voltage from the wall. At this point he mimed taking the two halves of a wall cord and putting them in his mouth. After about 45 repetitions of me saying "really??" and him saying "yes!" I just dropped it. I still don't know if I believe him.

I don't believe him.. JackFlash posted a description of an electrician trick along the same line of reasoning in that electrocution in a pool question. It I believe, although it is a little nuts :P
Many, many years ago I worked with an old electrician that would occasionally test circuits in a breaker panel to determine if the circuit was hot. He would do this by sticking one hand in his back pocket and then drying his finger tips on the other hand by wiping his shirt. He would then delicately touch the hot and neutral bars with his index and middle fingers. If the circuit was hot he would get a mild tingle from the path down one finger and up the other. (Don't try this at home, kids.) Dry skin is a very good insulator. [emphasis added]

Well if you can substitute a coyote, there was one in Monmouth County, NJ last night that tried to drag off a 10 month old baby while he and his 11 year old uncle (yes, uncle) were playing in the backyard. I think that shows enough mettle to get to the spirit of the challenge. How far is jjg from New Jersey?

Uh, so, in my LJ RPG, we're doing some stuff with dinosaurs and one of our characters is getting three of his fingers bit off by an allosaur.

So, what I really need to know is this: How much blood would that produce? Can someone let me know?

I didn't see THAT in his "Elements of User Experience" book. But, considering he was one of the Original Blogsters, it's not the MOST batshit crazy things he's ever done.
I'd also mention his secret bloggers' cabal/mailing list, but it may still exist and I'd like to maybe get back into it someday...

When I was a kid I worked as an electrician's helper for a while, pulling wires and other suchlike donkeywork. I remember one time I was removing a wall socket, er, before I was supposed to, and touched my trusty red robby screwdriver where I wasn't supposed to, and that sucker literally went flying out of my hand across the room. I have since (well, with a couple of notable and dangerously stupid exceptions) had a healthy respect for electrical power.

I can attest to this. I have a real high skin resistance or something. So I can grab onto a live 115V-15A curcuit and feel a mild tingle. 220V-40A is a lot more, um, exciting. My parents also tell the following story:

We're out at my great uncle's place for a visit. My GU keeps sheep and the lambs are contained by a short fence. I'm three and a half and my sister is two and a half and truth be told she's already pretty mean. Latter that year she'd beat up some five year with a hammer for repeatedly pushing me off my bike. Anyways; I'm hanging on to this low fence minding my own business and watching the lambs. My sister comes up along side and as soon as she touches the fence falls down. So she trys again and the same thing, on her ass. Already suspicious she goes about four metres away and while watching me leans on the fence. Bam on her butt. So she comes over and kicks me in the shins. She didn't know how I was doing it but I must have been causing her to get the shock from the electric fence.
