London meetup? April 22, 2007 3:35 AM   Subscribe

Is it time for another London meetup? Maybe something midweek, or a weekend afternoon picnic?

How about sometime between the 3rd and the 7th of May?
posted by sueinnyc at 3:35 AM on April 22, 2007

I'd be up for it.

I'd vote for the 3rd, as I'm away that weekend. I'm selfish like that.

I'd vote Picnic May 6th somewhere central-ish?

I could do something around then.

That's the bank holiday weekend, so that'd be cool. Something during the day would be cool as it'd mean that people wouldn't have to scamble for trains after a few hours. I'd definitely be up for that. Maybe we should have a backup plan in case it rains.

This all sounds good, but it's hardly a science trivia challenge, is it? (sigh)

What a wonderful idea!....wish I could be there.

Where in London?

I'll wait and see what you guys decide before telling you I can't make it.

Well, could you make a picnic on the Sunday?

I'll be at the Bretton Hall closing weekend that... uh... weekend.

I'm at a wedding on the 6th/7th.

By my very rough tally, it looks as though at least 5 or 6 of us might be up for a picnic on Sunday the 6th. Maybe in one of the main, central parks? Is there one that has some sheltered tables in case of rain?

For those who can't make it on the 6th, do you have a preferred alternate date?

Not that I can think of. I'm thinking Green Park might be good - easy to get to on the tube, hard to get lost in, walking distance to pubs if it rains.

Is bringing baby MeFites allowed? I may be able to pop down if I can bring the nippers along too.

Green Park is definitely a good shout. Very handy for me.

Yes, bring the kiddletons, that will be adorable.
posted by chrismear at 4:09 AM on April 24, 2007

You've clearly never met them.
posted by MrMustard at 4:40 AM on April 24, 2007

Just tell them you're a Villa fan, you'll get along fine
posted by blag at 6:14 AM on April 24, 2007

blag - Now I know that there are MeFites of all shapes and sizes, all creeds and hues and all imaginable religions, persuasions and orientations, but surely we draw the line at vile fans? I mean, we've got to have some standards.
posted by MrMustard at 7:51 AM on April 24, 2007

I like the Green Park idea too. And this would be a great opportunity to include the new generation of MeFites.

So shall we make it official - Sunday the 6th in Green Park in the afternoon? Shall we say 2 p.m.?

If there is some general sort of agreement, I'll work on adding it to the sidebar listing.

Erm, I am an idiot. I can't make the 6th after all, kiddies or no. Sorry.

On a meetup thread? You've got to be joking. Tell people when they're coming or they'll walk all over you with their having a life nonsense.

Just to nail this down properly:

London picnic, Sunday May 6th, Green Park, 2pm onwards

There's a snack bar just inside the park in the corner near the tube station. If we meet on the grass behind there (ie south of it) and someone posts a mobile number, we shouldn't have any trouble finding each other.

I'll put this in the sidebar.

I am so excited about picnic. Picnic!

Nice idea with the weekend and the daytime - with luck will manage to make this one!

If there's room for a U.S. resident on holiday, I will be visiting London in May and would love to attend your fine meetup.

How about that Queen, ladies and gentlemen!

Flying to Ireland that day for a week. Have a great time!

Thanks for taking the plunge and making it official, Cillit Bang. I'm really looking forward to it too.

Sorry for the delay in following up. I was out of town.

Leave amberglow out of this.

Looks good, I'll probably make it too since some nice london company was foolish enough to employ me (wahey!)

What are we doing about food? Bringing it or going en-mob and buying it somewhere? If the former, perhaps we might want to coordinate who brings what?

dhammond: visiting U.S. residents are welcome. You won't be the first (even in my short experience of London meetups).

fvw: I think that bringing food would be nice. Maybe we could make this a bit of a potluck?

Anyone? Thoughts?
posted by sueinnyc at 4:54 PM on April 29, 2007

There's a part of me that would like to organise the food-getting (shades of overthinking plates of things), but actually I think a pure pot-luck gathering will probably work out just fine. Everyone bring a bottle, plus food for one (and a bit, if hungry) person. Yeah?

There's always shops nearby if we're find we're desperately short of something.

Anyway, it'll be hilarious if we get there to find we've just got 437 Scotch eggs. I'd like to leave that possibility open.

Possibility, but can't be sure I'll make Saturday. If not, happy picnicing.

OK, I have emailed the powers that be re: the sidebar.
