In the never ending saga of lolcat scholarship (no snark please), our very own brownpau has gracefully snuck into the swaddling canon of of lolcat literature.

(no snark please)

You keep using that phrase. I don't think it'll have the effect you think it will.

brownpau is great and is getting married soon! This is especially important because faith and chastity are important to him apparently! Many cheers for brownpau!

I don't think they know what a macro is, either in the SA sense of the Word/compy sense.

I'm so tired of this "lolcat" business but brownpau is a classy guy so I support his increasing power in the media.

Quick, seal him in lucite and hang him on the "Metafilter's own" wall of fame!!

The LOL cat generator linked at the end of the "essay" is dangerous, indeed.

Very dangerous.

Swelling, I would think.

How does one pronounce 'lolcat'?
posted by gleuschk at 12:14 PM on May 21, 2007

I pronounce it like an abbreviated form of 'Lowell'. With a 'cat' at the end. Rhymes with 'polecat'.
posted by ND¢ at 12:18 PM on May 21, 2007

Hm, I would've said "rhymes with wall cat".

Soda, pop, or coke?

Indeed, dangerous.

There's a 1% opacity goatse embedded into that lolpresident macro. Just so you know.

I never thought lolcats were funny. Everything changed when I saw monorail cat.

Dangerous, but possibly inspiring.

lolcats is like so many other memes, 1 in 1,000 is funny, but when they are funny they are really funny.

Although, myself, I kind of like LJ's cat_macros group since they tend to be able to have a little more freedom with language than cheeseburger.

But damn, I like pictures of cats doing goofy shit. I can't help it.

They do seem to be getting less side-splitting. One has to go all postmodern or subtle to create a comical or edgy effect anymoar.

I only LOLed at monorail cat. Then it stole my budget.
posted by achmorrison at 2:56 PM on May 21, 2007 [1 favorite]

They do seem to be getting less side-splitting.

Because they're coming from the Internet at large, who seem to think it's enough to misspell a caption to make it funny. The best ones came from 4chan, Something Awful, and so on, where the requirements for "funny" are a lot more subtle.

Longcat isn't funny because he's long, he's funny because he's longcat.

I so wanted to make a lolcats with a cat at a monitor with an AskMe page showing "I has a question! (I has kittens! Want names!)" and another with a MeTa page showing "Noooo they be stealin' my question!" protesting its deletion. But it didn't work out.

Ah, here's a great example of what I was talking about above, how lolcats have lost their impact as the 4chan/SA influence has dropped: compare this image from icanhascheezburger with this one.

mendel, I'm curious which one is the 4chan/SA version of the images you linked to. I have a definite sense of which one is funnier; however, I don't know if my sense of humor is more akin to 4chan/SA or to the internet at large.

posted by taosbat at 11:16 PM on May 21, 2007

Oh, duh, sorry. The "Cheez" one is cheezburger's, the FAIL one is my own doing. It's not from 4chan because it's not caturday yet.

I'm sort of amused that even with the lolcat buildr, the "Cheez" one used the wrong font for motivational posters! There is no way cheezburger could have come up with INVISIBLE BIKE or MONORAIL CAT.

Also, for those of you who are at least slightly familiar with 4chan memes: YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. If they'd only known...
posted by mendel at 10:03 AM on May 22, 2007

Ah, I thought the FAIL one was funnier too. It's like the Cheez one is waaaay over thought and explained too much by the accompanying text.

Hmmm...
