cortex notes in passing something about the "admin console." Jessamyn drops a dark reference to the "admin-facing flags" interface. Come on MeFi elite admin caste! Let's see screenshots! Feel free to lie if the truth is not interesting.

There was a picture of it in Matt's presentation here.

Done!
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 6:54 PM on May 31, 2007

slide #45 in that presentation shows a tiny sliver of the recent flag hotspots and the tail end of "the matrix" view which is last 100 flags as they came in.

The rest of the tools aren't that interesting, it's all plain text data views.

Hmmph. If I were coding this place, you can just bet there'd be plenty of flashing, beeing things and a big, red, throbbing . . . button. A banhammer would be just TOO obvious.

Beeping, also. Lots of beeping things.

Gentlemen, what does it say about us that we all responded the way we did within three minutes of each other?

Yeesh. I feel dirty. And strangely attracted to both ColdChef and crash. Which makes me feel even dirtier.

I imagine that in a hidden room, in each of their houses, they have a terminal that allows them to connect to the Gibson which hosts MeFi.

How naive are all of you? Do you REALLY think they'd show us the ACTUAL Admin pages?

Sheesh.

This is totally a red herring so we don't know the truth - all the secret notes where they laugh at us, all the secret inline IMGs they add to threads that NO ONE ELSE CAN SEE, etc.

Jessamyn was prevaricating, but everyone at the Northern New England Meetup got an admin panel tour. Ask them.

I love the wheels on that console, whatever the hell they would be for.
posted by Mitheral at 9:41 PM on May 31, 2007

That console is a something-something on a submarine or battleship or something, as I recall. That's right, a something-something. (That is, it's not a computer)

I'm not so much interested in the admin screens, but more in the secret MeFi undersea base staffed by bond villains where it is housed. Or possible a moon base. A giant Zeppelin? Wait, ninjas?

It's a photoshop, not an actual picture. Or rather two actual pictures, combined in an amusing way.

The console in the back is one piece. The TV and the terminal in front were added in.

That's no console. This is a console! (I still want Metafilter-as-Q3-mod.)

I love how in the Fermilab picture that Rhomboid links, amongst the vast array of monitors and oscilloscopes, there's a magic 8 ball sitting on the desk. As if, when the core is about to overload, with warning lights flashing and alarms blaring, the physicists would think, "fuck it, we'll just ask the 8-ball what to do". Do we eject the fuel rods or ventilate the reactor? ASK AGAIN LATER.

Jesus, haven't you guys watched any movies at all? The admin console is a VRML virtual world. (Once you are made an admin, you are fitted for a full v-suit to navigate said world--the StimShortTM undergarment is of particular interest.)

posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 5:38 AM on June 1, 2007

Yes... that's true. I don't know if it'll come back (doubtful), but I can zip and send you all the bloggrounds... or actually, probably that whole section of the site, including the html, for the easier viewing. (plus, aw, you're sweet!)

No, no, not steal. They reference anyone and anything to riff on the movies. But, it immediately brought MST to mind for me. Can't remember the episode tho...
