Backtaggers: When you backtag an AskMe question, do you base your tags solely on the original question, or do you incorporate information about comments/answers? I realize there is probably no hard and fast rule, I'm just curious how y'all are doing it.

Once in a while that's a great solution, and more tags on something is rarely a bad idea, but generally for this project we don't want people to have to read the whole thread. When people post a question, they don't know the answer already. Really conscientious people may go back and add the answer to a question in the tags if it's relevant, but I'd still say it's more than we'd expect for this round of the tagging project.

But when I do (sometimes just to work out what the question is) and it's been answered, I add the tag because it's a 'great solution' and 'rarely a bad idea' and 'conscientious people may go back and add the answer as a tag' even though it's 'more than is expected' of me.

Actually, this is a grand opportunity to do a little backtagging update.....

Mefi: 22,513 untagged posts. (11,050 so far.)
Ask: 3,462 untagged posts. (5,964 so far.)

Almost 40% done!

dilettante has surpassed me as the all-time top tagger followed by divka, scratch, ThePinkSuperhero, blue_beetle, Hadroed, Rumple, CKmtl and trip and a half to fill out the top ten.

A few more notes for anyone who cares...

- tags aren't case sensitive, so don't go nuts with camel case unless you enjoy it
- a lot of people use tags like georgewbush without something like gwb or bush. not a huge deal but might want to consider all three
- people use brokenlink and deadlink pretty evenly. we'll change them all to one or the other at some point after this is all done.
- anyone who hasn't tried this yet, there is a tagging page that uses Yahoo keywords to pre-fill in the boxes. you still have to edit (and sometimes they're just wrong) but if you want to try it, email or IM me (or you can get it by adding _y to the end of the URL before the .cfm)
