So never having seen the word 'beignet' before, I checked my dictionary, and it's a doughnut, is this correct? You're inviting strangers to your house for doughnuts on Wednesday?

Is this common practice in southern USA? It just seems quite outside my social norms.

In case you're serious, Wednesday is the Fourth of July, which is a big 'ol holiday in the US of A. And yes, it's common practice to celebrate it in some fashion (being as I am from Canuckistan, their strange ways confuse and frighten me, too).

Saying beignets are donuts is like saying MetaFilter is Fark. They're all that and a sprinkling of sugar.

gnfti, does 'oilybols' mean anything to you? I was once told that that's what beignets are called in Holland. Was he pulling my chain?

Burhanistan is far from NOLA, but that sounds like a nice thing to do. I was just thinking of how to mark the 4th in a polite and gentle manner seeing as fireworks, gauche music, and beer don't really cut if for my ilk. Inviting people over for a quiet brunch is great idea. Thanks!

Absolutely. It's a traditional New Years' Eve food, and it's spelt "oliebol", pl. "oliebollen". But they are definitely not the same as what you would call beignets.

They *are*, however, commonly served alongside "appelbeignets", which I would say are similar to your beignets, but made with apples and reminiscent in taste of apple pie.

Oh and you guys pronounce it behn-YAY, amirite? How about the plural? In Dutch it's pronounced in that French way as well (kind of like bin-YAY), but we add the un-French s sound for the plural.

And what's with "hijinks", huh? Three dotted letters in a row! Some might say it should be written with a hyphen, but still. Of course, every generation hyphenates as they please. These are good topics Lou, feel free to chime in.

Yeah, it's funny how different civilizations all try to lay claim to having invented something, or how it permeates their languages and cultures in ways that portray it as somehow "typically" theirs.
