It seems lately there have been a lot of MeTa threads recently discussing things that have already been discussed to a simply ridiculous level of refinement. Is it appropriate to begin encouraging members to search MeTa before posting in the same way people are encouraged to search MeFi?

I'd say no. These are living issues evolving constantly, not duplicate links to (relatively) static sites. That's my take on it, anyway.

I say somewhere in between. I agree with Rush that the issues are changing, and if someone has something new to bring up, then go ahead and post.

But, looking at Willnot's examples, the problem with them seems to be more specifically that the posters did not do this. They just asked the question again. So yeah, they essentially are double posts, and should be treated in a similar manner: a reminder and a link to the original for anyone who wants to reference, and maybe bring in something new. Other than that, unnecessary MeTa threads seem to tend to die on their own because everyone peeks in, says "Been there, done that" and leaves it alone.
