When I was in the third grade I entered a county-wide coloring contest. I was REALLY geared up to win the first prize—it was a giant bucket of Swensen's bubble gum ice cream, which, if you were ever a kid, is like, the equivalent of winning the lottery, or best lolcat, the golden ticket, or something equally orgasmic.

I colored really, REALLY good...stayed in the lines and everything. I colored SO GOOD that I won the Grand Prize. I didn't even know there was a Grand Prize! So, thinking that I won possibly two or even THREE buckets of the precious bubble gums, I grabbed a bunch of spoons and waited for my salvation. There is really nothing like endlessly digging through ice cream for bubble gums, especially for an eight-year-old artistic genius.

Unfortunately, I got robbed. Instead of ice-cream-dreaminess, the "Prize" was that I had to be a guest member of the circus for an evening. They dressed me up like a clown, I had to hold some icky boy's hand all night, and we had to walk the perimeter of the circus, waving to kids and adults, all spectating, pointing, laughing, with ice cream dripping down their grubby hands. Oh, I so wanted to be with them.

I may have won that contest, but I never really felt like a winner. How I wished to be the first loser. Oh, how I wish...

The moral of my story is, Brownpau, I feel your pain. Other's have won the recognition that was rightfully yours. Life's not fair, and I learned the hard way too. I have never been able to eat bubble gum ice cream since then. And I'm scared of clowns.

Whoever submitted your photo is enjoying the benefits of your hard work. They were probably never a child. Maybe they don't even have a cat. Bastards. But just know that *I* understand what you must be going through right now. Somebody cares. Thanks MeFi, for giving me the means for telling my story. I've waited years.
