Can't add a contact July 27, 2007 7:39 AMSubscribe
I'm trying to add someone as a contact, but when I hit the "Add Contact" button I get a white screen that says "Wrong username and password, please try again."
What gives? posted by sourwookie to Bugs at 7:39 AM (34 comments total)
Works for me. The username/password perhaps suggests a cookie problem. Try logging out and in, and if that fails, clear all the *.metafilter.com cookies and log in again. posted by Aloysius Bear at 7:43 AM on July 27, 2007
PB has been working on security for the contact handling stuff; this might be a symptom of that. posted by cortex(staff) at 7:47 AM on July 27, 2007
Neither logging out nor cookie-clearing seemed to work. posted by sourwookie at 7:54 AM on July 27, 2007

because security for the contact handling stuff is a source of dire concern and much sleep loss amongst mefites the world over. posted by quonsar at 8:25 AM on July 27, 2007
I'm getting the same problem. posted by cillit bang at 8:40 AM on July 27, 2007
quonsar, try logging out, clearing your cookies, and removing the centipede from your vagina. posted by cortex(staff) at 8:42 AM on July 27, 2007 [1 favorite]

It was mentioned in another thread that they want to repurpose contacts as a permissions system for tagging.
It'd be nice if they could just trust everybody to behave but for some reason we get treated like little children instead. You wouldn't know why that would be, would you? posted by vacapinta at 9:14 AM on July 27, 2007
why, yes, it's because i've single-handedly ruined metafilter for altar boys like yourself. posted by quonsar at 9:21 AM on July 27, 2007 [1 favorite]
I think I tracked down the problem, try adding a contact again. Like vacapinta mentioned, we've been overhauling the contacts stuff a bit for the last couple days. posted by pb(staff) at 9:25 AM on July 27, 2007
Oh, man, I just checked on the Qualitifying server and it looks like someone tripped over the cord a while back. Dammit. posted by cortex(staff) at 10:01 AM on July 27, 2007

Sometimes there is a wistful pang of regret when I see my ratio of Metatalk posts rise. "Meatbomb," I say to myself, "you aren't talking about the best of the web, you are just talking about talking about the best of the web. It's vacuous, empty, it's like making a poo and expecting mama to cheer."
But then, every once in a while, some inane little poo poo I make on Metatalk gets a favourite. Of course I find out almost immediately, because I am constantly refreshing the "my history" page, looking for validation, and when it happens I feel an oh-so-gentle little tickling of my sphincter muscle, just there where I like it.
In the real world, I am nobody. But for that fleeting moment, I am Liza Minelli. They love me, and I love them. My people, my audience, they need me. I love you!
I love you, Metafilter! Why would someone get their own blog, with this much love right here waiting to be snatched from the ether?!? Metafilter, my brothers and sisters, I love you! Validate my existence! Love me back!! posted by Meatbomb at 3:17 PM on July 27, 2007 [2 favorites]
So what you're saying is that we need to disable favorite functionality for the Meatbomb account? posted by cortex(staff) at 3:26 PM on July 27, 2007
No, I am saying that sometimes Metafilter makes me feel like Liza Minelli. I am not certain whether that is a good or bad thing. posted by Meatbomb at 4:57 AM on July 28, 2007
