The explanation is that people choose their usernames based on topics/items/popculture that interest them. So naturally at some point in a Mefite's posting career, a post will be eponysterical!

(That being said, I have no plans to post about typewriters, though I do like them.)

Option three, with a qualification (see below). I'm firmly in Well I Dunno territory this morning, by all indications. Not enough sleep, probably.

"Eponysterical" is idiomatic—your breakdown of its meaning is good-naturedly wrong, because its meaning cannot be cleanly deduced from its form as you proposed above any more than "every dog has its day" can be taken as a statement about calendars. Nothing about the common local usage suggests that a post itself has to be hysterical.

Qualification, because I've had some coffee now: it may be that when you say this:

none of those posts seemed riotously funny to me

You mean not (a) to discount the claims of eponysteria on the basis that the post material itself was not hysterical, as I originally read you, but (b) to discount that the juxtaposition of post material and handle was hysterical, which is a fair cop for some of those. If it's the latter, I apologize for the confusion.

Of course, how genuinely hysterical a juxtapostion has to be to qualify as "eponysterical" is an argument of its own—I think one could reasonable argue that the aptness of the juxtaposition is paramount, and the notion of outright hystericalness is damped some what in subordinance to that, hence my claim that the phrase is idomatic rather than literal.

More coffee now. Sorry.

Jeez. Tough crowd. Here's my rewrite:

Whilst idly perusing the front page of metafilter, I happened to notice that, in some cases, the content of a front page post was in some way related to the username of the person who posted this. Below, I have appended some examples that I found particularly amusing. Let me hasten to add that:

(1) The relationship between content and username is admittedly a subjective evaluation, and in some cases (homunculus and a chemistry-related post, for example) the connection may be quite tenuous.

(2) Similarly, I freely admit that some of these connections - likely because of their subjective nature - may be amusing only to me, and may strike other MeFites as quite pedestrian or far-fetched. I would be happy to provide a detailed explications of any of the connections to anyone desiring one.

(3) Also related, I freely acknowledge that these apparent connections may be of interest only to me, and to no-one else, and thus my posting may constitute an unnecessary waste of time to that large majority who have absolutely no interest in this topic. While I humbly submit that this quality does not distinguish my post from any other post on any other section of Metafilter, I do recognize that it is an inherent flaw and do beg the forgiveness of those whose time I may have wasted.

(4) While it would be interesting to identify a single term in wide usage that adequately expressed this (admittedly subjective) relationship - juxtapostition? reFPPlexive? eponycontentandusernamearetenuouslyrelatedous? - to do so may ignite a vitriolic snarkfest on the appropriate definition and application of said word, which would be counterproductive to my intended goal of providing light Monday-morning amusement.

Nevertheless, and given all of these qualifications, I hope that some small subset of MeFites might find these juxtapositions mildly amusing, and the much larger set of MeFites who do not will not be too troubled by the 15 seconds wasted in looking at my post. Thus I do humbly submit, for your consideration and possible amusement, this group of posts.

Of course, how genuinely hysterical a juxtapostion has to be to qualify as "eponysterical" is an argument of its own
It's not a constant cutoff; it's inversely proportional to the square of number of times the phrase has been used. A special case of the Meme-Humor Theorem [F. Kutya, 2001].

Adelaide, 1977. John Dowler (vocals), Mark Kohler (drums), Andrew Richards (bass), Mike Jones (guitar) and Mark Carroll (guitar) form Young Modern. One year later they release their debut single - "She's Got the Money"/"Automatic" (Top Gear) - a mighty fine slice of power pop heaven. Their future looks bright, so they move to Sydney. In 1979 they disband. [more inside]

You can't keep a good thing down, though. 2005 Aztec Music rereleased their posthumous LP "Play Faster" [mp3 samples] and eventually Young Modern regrouped. And earlier this year a CD called "How Insensitive" hit the shelves and fans of fresh and adorable pop tunes rejoiced. Young Modern are back and if you are a fan of, say, Hoodoo Gurus you owe it to yourself to check them out.

And, oh yeah, Young Modern once dubbed themselves the "ultimate suburban band".

Anyway, I'm not trying to pick on the 'eponysterical' crowd too much. The whole meme is just an example of people being silly and repetitive when they think that they're being clever. However, a lot of internet 'humor' fits into this category, so I guess it's unfair for me to single out 'eponysterical.'

Whilst the word "eponysterical" may be a delightful portmanteau to some, and an irritating meme to others, it is a neologism that describes a phenomenon that has been remarked upon elsewhere. ie. it's not just a Metachat thing. The New Scientist, for instance, has long entertained me with its ongoing investigations into nominative determinism in the sciences. You want to see an irritating meme? -------> ^.
posted by nowonmai at 9:26 AM on August 13, 2007

I assumed eponysterical meant "amusingly or unexpectedly eponymous," or eponymous-ish, anyway. The thing is, people choose both their nicknames and their posts based on their interests, so in many of these cases, it's not unexpected in the least. The wallstreet1929 contribution, for example, suggests that perhaps he's interested in the behavior of the stock market. Most of these are along those lines.

Or on belated preview, what typewriter wrote. Hey wait! Epon-- never mind.

I am not Greek. I am not named Stavros. I am not a chicken. I am pretty wonderful, though.

Actually, the given name 'Stavros' (Σταυρος) means 'cross' in Greek, and refers to the crucifixion. The 'wonder' and 'chicken' bits then let us read the nickname as a heretical commentary on the final days of Jesus, or possibly a reference to the psychology of fear, which crucifies us on metaphorical crosses of our own making. Or both.

Actually, not really. The story I tell on my profile is true. It was just a brain fart (probably spurred by the memory of one of my great friends when I lived in Greece, the owner of the Irish bars on Mykonos, Paros and Naxos, Stavros Akritides).
