The fireproof safes have a chemical reaction that takes place within the container that keeps the inside at acceptable temperatures. It works as sort of an insulation that keeps the inside cool and can only do that for a finite amount of time. I also assume that the 1/2 hour is conservative.

That really confused me. Until I got to that part of the podcast, I was thinking, "Where isn't an awesome place to say 'thread'?" I say it everywhere. In the middle of the produce section, I thump watermelons and calmly intone "thread." Driving down the highway in my rusty Mercedes, I crank an old Clapton CD up to 11 and, in a cool, bluesy way, sing out "threeaaaad." In an old cathedral at sunset, I pray "give us this day our daily thread." In the workshop behind my house, I bring the hammer with ferocious force down upon my thumb, and my primal yell echoes across the neighborhood, "THREAD!" And every single time, each in its own way, is awesome.

The plan is to mix it up a little 1/3, 1/3 and 1/3, assuming we're on top of things enough to really do that, so if you have a favorite type, it will cycle round again.

I'm loving these, but man, there's an awful lot of "I didn't see/read that one" in the Podcasts. During the part on the death mask, when Jessamyn was all "read the post!", I'm sure I wasn't the only one mentally screaming "Tell Matt RTFP, n00b!". I am firmly convinced that it's true that you all only spend about 10 minutes an hour on the site, though.

Good stuff, though. Keep 'em coming.

I think we're both guilty of finding stuff we personally like among the giant pile of possibilities. We hadn't done updates in a month, so we're talking a potential of about 750 posts to choose from on mefi, and about 1500 questions on ask mefi.

You can't argue with mathowie, he's using MATH.

I think the bigger issue is that we don't talk about what we're going to talk about beforehand, there's very little planning or scripting, so it's warts and all I guess.

I'd love to do a little stats gathering where we see what percentage of users read what percentage of the site. Like I know we have huge swaths of people that never go to Meta, or don't look at Projects and I bet even for stuff like AskMe, very few people read the [more inside] to every question.

I know, I'm just a little miffed that the one time something I posted was featured (the Missed Connection Comics) she was absolutely clueless about it. I teared up just a bit.

I understand the scope we're talking about, though. I spend about 20% of the time here than I did when I was working my previous job (and a lot more active 'round these parts). That's not a slight about the quality of MeFi, but more my personal career-choice and not working a mindless gov't job. Well, that and the addition of Ask, Music, Jobs, et. al and ~30k more members.

I don't mean this in a bad way, in fact, I mean it as a bit of a compliment, but that's totally obvious. It actually kind of sounds like a bit like the beginning of nearly every meetup I've attended (or, more recently, hosted). People at meetups that have never met before tend to talk about recent posts in a vague attempt to, I guess, break the wall. It's interesting to see what different users gravitate to and compare that to your mental notes about them. But it's familiar and fun, and works pretty well.

I pronounce it "zo my god!" Just like I pronounce "OMG" as "oh my god" rather than "oh-em-gee," and "BBQ" as "barbecue." An exception is that "WTF" can legitimately be pronounced as "double-u tee ef."

I'd be interested in this too but wouldn't RSS screw it up? For example, I read ask more than anything but do that all in thunderbird (only clicking through when I want to see answers), while I occasionally read metafilter on the actual page. So the stats would show me reading metafilter a lot more even though I don't.

I've been traveling a lot recently with no internet access and this is where I expect the podcast to shine. No pesky trawling through to catch up, just a quick jaunt through the coolest bits with Matt and Jess. Much more efficient. Nice timing having the podcast (*checks iTunes* ooo, two podcasts) ready for me almost fresh upon my return.
