I really hope that mathowie isn't bothered by me posting this here, but since he's talking about in on his site, I'm going to assume it's okay. Matt's dad has had a stroke, and is in hospital. The reason I bring it up is to request that we maybe take some care not to break things here over the next little while, and maybe send some positive thoughts in the general direction of Matt's family.

My father always used to say his first stroke was the best thing that happened to him - it's like a "rite de passage" and kept him on his toes. A blood clot is a indeed a "dot" and the important thing is to dissolve the little bastard.

By taking the appropriate anti-coagulants(epurine and the like), sticking to a delicious and healthy diet, taking long walks and finding a good doctor able to balance the blood-thinning agents with the hemorrhaging danger - though it's not easy - he should just about guarantee himself a long, pleasurable and knowledgeable life.

Longer and happier than if the warning had come later...

Most strokes occur without people being aware of them. Or when you're too old to do much about them. But Matt's only 29 so I guess his father is still a youngish man as well.

Constant supervision and taking the trouble to be checked out and explore medical knowledge to the limit - it's also quite fascinating, as taking up an interest in your body's workings is the best kind of hobby - are surely in order.

Being Jewish, though raised as a Catholic, I hope he won't mind me sending a prayer for him to be placed in the Western Wall in Jerusalem. I've only done this twice before and it always works,thank G-d.

Besides, he's probably Irish, which helps a lot!

Well, this certainly sucks. Just read Matt's entry about clearing the artery blockage. Sounds very hopeful. Still, this sucks. Really, really sucks. May Lady Luck fall in love with all of you.

Having had my mother come safely out of the hospital after recent surgery, I empathize.

My grandmother had a stroke, and I agree with Miguel that if everything works out all right, it can actually be a blessing in disguise. I'm a little rusty at it, but tonight prayers will go to your pop and the rest of your family.

Be kind to yourself. This is the kind of thing that rocks family members at least as hard as the one that is sick. I hope the entire Haughey family finds a quick and smooth path through this trial.

The first time something medically bad happened to my Dad, I was so disoriented. There was the shocking realization that he wasn't bulletproof... I have come to find out that he is, however, bullet-resistant.

Matt, you lamented that you have no co-workers to share stuff with, but you're sorta wrong: all MeFi members are your officemates! Seriously -- we are the community that you have created, we all interact with each other (daily, sometimes), we all "know" each other's tendencies, and we all appreciate you & your wonderful creation. MeFi is, in more than a virtual sense, our collective watercooler. Having said that, you know that we all wish your father a speedy & full recovery, and your family best wishes. Hang in there -- as referenced earlier, your father is a strong man with a loving family, and receiving excellent care. Again -- best wishes to your father & family.
