If we let this go past the fifth anniversary, it'll never go away. September 11, 2007 7:19 AM   Subscribe

Let's not this year.

I'd like the admins to delete these posts, because they suck. Every year we have this stupid little conversation about how it's the anniversary. Let's not; it's tacky and redundant. Barring a moratorium, I'd like to see the admins hold these anniversary posts to some standard higher than obitfilter's "You were first."

While I personally agree with the sentiment, I also appreciate the fact that people still need to grieve (or not grieve) in their own ways. And I sincerely doubt that if someone manages to craft a really good post with relevant and new links, the mods won't delete it just because there are those who'd prefer to forget or deny.

And, Poolio's post wasn't just a simple, "Hah, first!" post. It's more of a youtube overkill post.

They suck about as much as normal posts that have the "this is important" vibe about them. We're not going to get everyone agree not to post them, so let's just have one or two posts that people can choose to interact in [and now this one for snarking, thanks for that] and let it be.

This seems like sort of a tricky one; I hear where you're coming from, but it's also kind of a weird thing to try and just flip a switch on, considering it's such an organic, aggregate phenomenon. "Six years is one too many to still react to foo" seems just weirdly mechanical.

It's not exactly elephant day, is the thing I'm trying to say.

Jokey Patriotism day posts are the snarky equivalent of NEVAR FORGET. If it weren't for the anniversary, Amis's windbaggery would have been completely obvious, and deletable, rather than sacrosanct. My point is that it wouldn't have lasted yesterday, but today another "Islamofascism is the cult of death" post stuck to the front page because he got to make the joke about how 9/11 preserves the Arabic numerals. Ha ha NEVAR FORGET IX/XI.

I do care. I have lots of sticky, uncomfortable, difficult emotions on the anniversary, and sticky uncomfortable difficult stories to match them. I don't like feel called to share them, though.

This is all true. What does the "America" videos post have to do with this? I didn't even understand it was related to 9-11 until someone mentioned it in the thread.

I'm with anotherpanacea. These anniversary posts are becoming more celebratory with each passing year.

The way to commemorate it would have been a link to a story about some still-grieving person, to the recently concluded engineering stuides of the towers collapse, or to the respiratory sickness the people who worked down there now seem to have. But I don't see how turning the front page into the 4th of july aisle at walmart is even remotely the best of the 9-11 web.

To give these mourning duties to your father:

In filial obligation for some term
To do obsequious sorrow: but to persever
In obstinate condolement is a course
Of impious stubbornness; 'tis unmanly grief;
It shows a will most incorrect to heaven,
A heart unfortified, a mind impatient,
An understanding simple and unschool'd:
For what we know must be and is as common
As any the most vulgar thing to sense,
Why should we in our peevish opposition
Take it to heart? Fie! 'tis a fault to heaven,
A fault against the dead, a fault to nature,

Is death of fathers, and who still hath cried,

'This must be so.'

I guess it would be nice if people could refrain from constructing a post whose goal is just to make a "point" about 9/11. I'm talking about the specific construct of the post itself, not the content of the main link(s). To me, Poolio's post isn't really so much about 9/11 as it is about Poolio. It's his way of saying, "Look how clever I am -- in an ironic hipster sort of way!" The links themselves aren't really the point of the post -- they were obviously chosen solely because they fit the clever "idea" Poolio came up with. If I ran the show, I would suggest that the focus should be on the content of the links themselves, not on how those links service a point being made by a particular poster.

Of course, I'm also in the camp that says people can skip posts that don't interest them.

This is Jingoistic nonsense. Really - I'm pretty ashamed for you right now. And god only knows why there are 50 links. Is that 1 link for every 13,100 Iraqis that have died in your so called War on Terror?

6 years ago, this might have been posted by someone who wasn't American. At this very moment, it just seems trite. Kind of like you need to tap yourselves on the back because no one else will do it for you. America the Great. Yeah, really.

And so on and so on and so on.

Seriously, just fuck off. We get it. You don't live here. You're not an American. You don't have to walk around all way somehow trying to keep the cognitive dissonance of your personal beliefs conflicting with the fucked up policies of the current administration from making your head explode. September 11th means something very different to you, we get it.

But you know what? Everyone deals with this shit in different ways. And we're all in it together, much as you may not like the idea of America being relevant in any way.

So seriously? Take your fucking snarks, write em all down on a little piece of paper, and shove it up your ass. Another day I'd probably deal with it. Probably engage in reasoned debate concerning our foriegn policy and it's consequences.

But today is the day that I just get to miss Kevin and be sad and angry at the world. So take your snark, and fuck off.

I thought it was weird and corny. Like if I waited until the anniversary of Mother Theresa dying and posted a bunch of youtube clips of the Flying Nun, or memorializing the anniversary of a tsunami with a dozen covers of "Wipeout".

Everyone "grades" posts in different ways, and I respect that viewpoint. Personally, I liked Poolio's post, because it was an easy way to zone out for a minute and remember the times we were allowed to just like America without qualifying it with a screed about how we hate Bush and Iraq was wrong etc etc etc.

So I'm not going to take issue with you on that.

But this isn't that situation, really. Your example is a little reductionist, because Poolio's post was certainly more than the same clip repeated a dozen times. Again, I won't argue the overall merit of the post because that's always subjective, but he certainly didn't just phone in a generic post, and in the thread betwixt the "feel ashamed for your grief, bad america!" snarking and the "LOLUSA airplane joke" bullshit there were people who enjoyed the post, and were grateful.

This would be more like a Tsunami memorial thread where people made a bunch of "l2swim" and "wear a lifejacket next time duh" posts.

It's a rough day for a lot of people. There could be many different approaches to getting through it. But just as Mother Theresa, the Tsunami, and 9/11 are all tragic situations that call for more than a junky post, they also all really just don't need the fucking snark.

We've got 364 other days to hate on American foreign policy and Bush and hock loogies as the world burns. Today isn't that day.

I linked to it because I wanted to highlight a foreign take (even one I disagreed with).

chuck, single-link op-eds are generally frowned upon here; Matt's said many, many times he doesn't think they're right for the front page. Did you know that?

I'm glad Sept. 11 is over. Till next year, when the rubes will start bawling again. Only 606 more years till we've caught up. But then again, we've already started massacring random Muslims. YEW ESS AY! YEW ESS AY!

Um, hi nkaujnom! Don't do that!
I find it weird. Not only the dumbness of some self-linkers but as in this case - forewarned and still doing it without any attempt at subterfuge. What is it?
